Rain Delay 9 by JocelynSamara Rain Delay 9 by JocelynSamara
Introducing “Rain Delay”: goofy little gag comics to keep you entertained while I work on the legit stuff. ^_^

Party's Over
Fun fact: This particular Rain Delay was almost a normal page. It was cut when I realized I didn't want to drag out the chapter any longer than I absolutely had to. Not to mention, I really wanted to close the chapter on the shock value of the twist, rather than carrying on with goofy humor.

Mind you, I would go so far as to say that if there was ever a Rain Delay that should probably considered canon, it's this one. There's kind of an alarming amount of character development and loose end tie-ups in there to just be a silly side gag.

As with most of the "Ryan Delays", this dips into a more subtle social commentary sort of joke than a laugh-out-loud gag.

Gay guy kisses a girl?
"Le gasp! How can this be!? What can it mean!? Black is white, up is down; everything I know is wrong! Aaaaahh!"

Gay guy kisses a straight guy?
"Eh. What else is new? Sucks to be that guy. You know, he kissed me once too. True story."

This can, incidentally, be turned vice versa. Fact is, whether people accept homosexuality or not, I think they just don't like when their "categories" end up being thrown into question. This doesn't speak for everyone, of course; it's just another observation of mine to what I see in life.

Just some food for thought, I guess. ^_^

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

I do believe you in that regards, in someway it is like a loose thread that ties the next chapter to the previous one. After all I'm sure you hate it when a book has a good plot moment and than it continues on for 3 pages leaving you unsatisfied. After all what will Emily do now after seeing this little incident at her party, don't know, just need to go to next chapter to see the aftermath. So in essence of anime, this is like the first public Rain deleted scene. Hope there are some more cuts in the hard copy.

Ironically I never considered that possibility of ignorance. to be honest I always assumed everyone was out to get you and will use what ever they can find as ammunition. In someway your description makes sense that people would assume that Rudy tried to take advantage of Ryan over "OMG RAIN MANAGED TO SEDUCE RUDY SOMETHING IS WRONG!" But than again its great to get these revelations from a good story. Never would've thought about it.

I also don't know Ryan's otaku-level. I would've assumed him to be knight (if he was like Gavin), or if he was more like Maria he would be either a male character from Kaminari or even a videogame hero like Link.

I actually think the "Party's Over" works better as a "Rain Delay" than as part of the actual story. It's over-the-top, it shows the characters interacting, and it's pretty funny how everyone is making Emily angry. But it doesn't appear to make any significant contribution to the canon; a lot of what happened here could be speculated, but the strip brings it into light. I can understand what you were saying about wrapping the chapter up with the twist: the last page could have been greatly extended, but that might have lessened the impact (and made longest-chapter-so-far even longer).

And I love reading any sort of social commentary! One of the greatest uses of art, in my view, is to point out what's wrong with society, espeically by making fun of our foibles. And it is worked in a funny way, in "Ignorance". I definitely agree that people feel very uncomfortable when their expectations are not fulfilled, or when people fail to fit into one category. Society tries to tell us what we are, and we too often fall into the trap of not only believing it, but completely defining ourselves by it. I am a young adult, I am a man, I am white, etc. Yet there is one definition that society neglects: I am me, I have to be me, because I am the only person who can be me. If we only define ourselves by how we are viewed by those around us, then what have we become? *steps off soapbox* You definitely make a good point that the reactions of shock, both from the other partygoers and from the readers, may be due to the fact that Rudy's actions defy the preconception everyone has of him. At the same time, however, I think Devon and Holly's "chill" reactions may be a bit exaggerated. I think displays of affection, in general, can be a shocker, and that a kiss will add drama to any situation (especially if no prior romantic involvement has been established). Your readers would still have been shocked if Gavin, Maria, or Kylie (all characters whose interests in Rain have been revealed) was the one kissing Rain. While the it is quite possible that the massive reaction is due to Rudy defying his "category", I think a "surprise kiss scene", in general, is going to cause some uproar.

TL;DR: Another great pair of strips! The first offered a window into what may have passed after the shocking scene of shock in a quite humorous way (by making Emily mad). The second brought back everyone's favorite totally normal guy, Ryan, while pointing to a potential reason for the backlash regarding the kiss scene through subtle social commentary.

Only 13 days until Chapter 7 starts (and, if I recall, there's at least one more Delay on the way)! Thanks for these little gems in-between the big chapters; they're always a delight. I hope the hiatus has provided you with ample opportunity both to relax and to create, and as always, I look forward to reading more!

Just an idea, but if you wanted to make "Party's Over" cannon, couldn't you use it as a flashback in a future page?

I did consider this, but I don't know. It always looked sloppy and detached in the script.

Fair enough :)

Funny, i don't think it would have been a shock had Rudy kissed Ryan. And yeah people don't always like it when their "categories" are thrown into question.
