In my mind, I can already see the relentless barrage of comments saying, "But having to go to the bathroom doesn't need to be an issue.  Why doesn't Ruby just _____."  There's no time for that!  The kid's been drinking a large soda from a fast food establishment; this is urgent!  Home is miles away.  The quieter bathroom is on the other end of the mall.  The back alley is creepy.  It has to be the food court bathroom and it has to be right now!  XD

Hyperbolic silliness aside, Ruby could probably find a safe, easy solution with a little extra thought, but one does not always think clearest in these moments.

I am finally all caught up, and I read nearly the whole thing on three individual days. Now then.

I just need to learn to be patient for actually waiting for the pages, haha.

when i used the mens restroom for the first time i had a classmate stand watch for me to make sure no one tried to come in and then i chickened out and just washed my hands before immediately leaving
i always use the family restroom if there is one available because i don't have to deal with other people

I used the family restroom while I was working at Wal-Mart. Would have used the women's restroom, but, you know, company policy.

I'd love to say it shouldn't be an issue, but I can imagine the fear that Ruby might be feeling right now (I'd love it if we got rid of gendered washrooms at some point, though I doubt I will see it in my life time). Seems like most possible solutions are scary and pose the risk of some kind of harassment. And the ones that don't, I can't even think of.

So what I hope to see Ruby do. Go use the Lady's washroom (you're dressed as one and have no malicious intent) be as confident about it as she can be, even though she's panicking big time on the inside, enter a stall, sit down, start, and then have Ana, Colette and Madison walk in, also needing to use the washroom, and I shall observe how tragedy and comedy go hand in hand (while hoping nothing too traumatic happens).

In my experience, as long as you look enough like a girl, act natural, and don't say a word, nobody cares if you use the ladies' room.

true, me as long as you don't make a mess or look in other stalls, I don't care who uses which bathroom.

Restrooms and elevators. Both of them are surprisingly often in hidden, creepy hallways at malls.

I've been lucky so far. I have yet to be called out for being in the wrong restroom, and have even once been specifically directed to the women's restroom once when asking an employee where the restrooms were (not that I knew until I got there that I was specifically directed to the women's room :aww:).

To trash talk him yeah, that would  be fun for Rudy, but as Ruby not as smart a decision. So you  know there are places out there that are for all genders but that probably won't be at the mall, the being said I am sure if he is careful  there is probably a way to handle it, public restroom both men and women are pretty bad, I don't really like use the anyway.

Best course of action, use the ladies room. He currently appears female, no one would question him. Though im sure he'll feel very self concious. But hey, at least the ladies room has stalls, right? No one will see him do his buisiness

Why doesn't Ruby point into the distance and scream "Oh no, it's the reanimated corpse of Jefferson Davis!" and then very quickly pee into a potted plant while everyone is looking the other way?

Gendered bathrooms are CRAP. They give non cis folk SINKING feelings. They make them STALL going to the bathroom and then they have to go home, or hold it, which can cause stuff like constipation or peeing themselves. Ugh.

Did you....it feels like half the reason to bringing this up was for the puns. XD

Apparently, gendered bathrooms became a thing around the time women were first entering the workplace, for fear that they couldn't handle the stresses of man's world, and needed a special separate 'break room' to recover, which were supposed to include both separate toilets, curtains, lounge couches...a personal 'haven' to escape the stresses of the world.

And here I thought that it was because it wasn't "proper" for men to be present in a room where women were removing their underdrawers . . . or vice versa, for women to "inadvertently" spy male genitals uncovered.

Nope! Remember, bathrooms have lockable stalls. No one should be seeing anything of anyone. You have to pretty deliberately 'spy' on someone by either climbing up over the top, or laying down on the ground.

In reality yes, but I was speaking of perceptions--in other words, the public perception in those days was that a man should be nowhere near a woman who is in a state of undress--this was an era where even male physicians were hesitant to examine female patients for fear of being accused of sexual impropriety.

Oh poor Ruby. You didn't entirely think this through did you?

Though it will be interesting for Rudy to see first hand what kind of stress Rain has had to endure. Ruby, as such a novice, could be a really neat vessel for exploring various Firsts.

...i did not expect to be this invested in Rudy or especially Ruby. You really can't write a character I don't get invested in do you lol.

First time I used the womens room at a convention I stayed in the stall till it was empty, and I wound up wrapping the tentacle hair of my Inkling girl costume around me like a scarf before going to wash my hands.

Looks like Rudy/Ruby got into a situation they hadn't anticipated...
Door #1: Sneak into the women's restroom, either making evidence for the transgender theory, or tarnishing his character, because he actually doesn't belong there.
Door #2: He uses the men's restroom, and potentially get harrassed.

Sadly, it's not necessarily a guarantee that's a thing.  Most places I've seen still don't have one, instead opting to have one larger stall in the back of the bathroom for accommodating disabled folks.  This would still force Ruby into one of the gendered bathrooms.

-w- very well then... we take a stall... so no one sees anything... >w> its note like ladies have urinals... well not that I've seen so yeah just close the stall sit do the biz and done boom Ruby dosnt have to worry about a thing... its best not to think too hard about these things

Here's the thing:

There's this whole five seconds from the entrance to the stall where you're just in a small, cramped room with any number of extra people who have nothing to do but stare at everything around them. The time spent outside the stall is longer if there's a line or if you really have to wash your hands afterward. In my personal experience, most of my worst trans experiences have happened in that incredibly short window immediately before or after the stall, but still in the bathroom.

You'd be surprised. A lot can happen in that time.  And that it's happened to me numerous times makes it hard to just "not think about".

^w^ im glad im having this conversion though >.> but yeah my worst experience would be with by grandparents because I lived with them and i was in a tiny rural town but that's over now.

Yeah, always a scary issue to deal with. When I first went to a public restroom as Myself, I went straight into a stall and stayed there till everyone else had left. Sometimes it takes a while to get past that. Sometimes I Still wait till everyone else is out before I go to wash my hands... It can be nerve wrecking... Especially living in the south...

Miles from home. Wow this mall must be the closest one. Or what are the odds they all went to the same mall 3 cities away. Anyway. I like Ruby's expression in the last panel. She has the look of "I'm an idiot. Too much soda!"😨

Five years of transition later (and even almost a year post-op), and I still get super anxious in public restrooms.  I've had too many bad experiences early on making it hard to get over.  I tend to try my best to avoid using them altogether, but if I have to, I'm the same as you: I'll wait for everyone to leave.
