Introducing the Adventures of Ryan, the Totally Norm-… wait a second… :O_o:

Seriously though, this is the start of a potentially very interesting turn of events. Some readers have basically been demanding something like this to happen since Chapter 1. Others of you guessed this direction with the last page but hoped you were wrong. I hesitate to agree with what Rain’s doing here, and yet I can hardly blame her. Coming out to someone - especially family - is hard.

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

I'm not sure if it's been asked, but is Aunt Fara actually asking her question aloud? Because if she is, how does her nephew not hear her?
Tiruin Featured By Owner 4 days ago  Student Writer
Speech bubbles without any connection to the character, or outlined in light grey (which is sometimes easily missed, but the effect is perfect for reflecting thought) mean unspoken ideas. :)

ok, thanks.

Rain even still HAS boy clothes?  For some reason, I didn't expect her to own anything masculine.  She's just too adorable.

I'm on yet another reread so I already know how it goes, but Fara... did you really expect Rain to do any differently? She didn't even tell her closest friends that her mom died or that she had siblings...
Wiinner159 Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2013
Now the question is... where'd those male clothes come from if Rain doesn't want to associate herself with her birth gender?
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner Oct 16, 2013  Professional Writer
Fara probably made her keep a set of clothes or two just in case.  It's what I did.
Wiinner159 Featured By Owner Oct 16, 2013
Ah that makes sense, good 'ol Fara always thinking ahead for Rain

Honestly, I think Rain should tell her siblings, but seeing Rain as Ryan now, s/he actually is a pretty cute male lol, but is damn beautiful as a female hehe. (doesn't know if I should use male or female anymore TTuTT )

All I can think about is Ty the Regular Guy.

Who killed a racist with a handheld drill and is on the run from the police.

"Hi. I'm Ty. I'm just a regular guy."

I totally get her reaction. I'm still not out to my family and I'm several months into HRT. Doubtless I'll have to tell them oncemy breasts get too big to hide.

mmm I though she was going to do this, but hoped otherwise. Oh well, I get it.

poor rain

Oh, Rain... I suppose neither route could be called "easy", but she's chosen the less confrontational and "safer" of the two. Still, that she's shown herself to her brother at all (and that she believes she can still pass as male) took some courage and confidence, so she deserves credit for that.

Fara really acts as the "reader insert" for the page; most readers, regardless of what they were expecting on this page, are looking forward to Rain being able to come out, and be herself, among her family members. It may be uncomfortable for Fara, and for the readers, but how must it be for Rain? To continue to pretend to be someone she's not? Still, she can't push it or force it; if she's not ready, she's not ready. It seems like it was Aunt Fara's hope that Rain would use Aiken's visit to gvie her a chance to come out. While this was well-meaning, I don't think external pressure is the right approach; instead, Fara needs to give Rain confidence, and support her when she decides the time is right.

As far as Rain's (er, "Ryan"'s) design goes, I like it. I'm glad she hasn't lopped off her ponytail, too - without making any long-term changes, this is probably the most masculine she could make herself look in the last twelve hours. She still looks like she could pass as a girl - but then again, Aiken probably has a very different idea of "Ryan" than I, as a reader, have of Rain, so our expectations are shaped differently. Plus, it's possible that certain details are "lost in the translation" of actually drawing it out.

We also hear Rain struggling with her voice, in a manner reminiscent a similar incident way back in chapter 1. On top of not having used her "masculine" voice in a while, she's super-nervous, so I wonder if she'll be able to keep it up.

I can't say I'm surprised, but I am intrigued. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where this story arc ends up.

This would of been a great opportunity, to give some people hope to come out to their family. Even if its just a comic it feels real. But no, you do this, which will add to their worry. Way to go.....
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner Sep 25, 2012  Professional Writer
I disagree. Would it really have been more "uplifting" for her to come out and have her brother flip out over it? I think that'd produce more worry in those who haven't come out yet. Or do you mean, she should've comes out dressed as a girl, and everything is fine with little to no issue? Rain is meant to inspire hope and determination in those who might be too afraid to make progress; this is true. But I'm not going to lie to people. That doesn't help anyone.

The reality of the situation is that coming out - especially to family - is really, REALLY hard. I'm going through this a bit myself at the moment, so I KNOW this. Rain's fear is totally reasonable. I agree that it wasn't technically the right thing to do, but the right thing is scary, hard and loaded with unknowns. And I want to depict this as such because I don't believe it should look easy. If it looks too easy, then those yet to come out, won't be as prepared. I stress that people should keep optimistic about this stuff, but have a plan in case things do go sour. If you don't feel ready to come out, then you really shouldn't force yourself.

Finally, I'll just say that Rain has gone through many difficult situations up to this point in the comic, and has for the most part, conquered them all. I think it's better to show the protagonist get into bad situations and figure out ways to get out of them, than simply having everything go right all the time. That's where the hope and determination comes from.
PinkChristina Featured By Owner Sep 25, 2012
I was hoping for more along the lines of he flips out but comes to accept it through the chapter. As long as she comes out eventually. But false hope is still hope. I came out to my parents they freaked out & guess what when i finished college this last may i literally told them to fuck off & haven't seen them again. It happens but it was for the best. If people can't accept you for who you are, you don't really need those people.

oh dear poor Rain.
i have this remarkably awkward situation in my head where aiken askes to see ruby and rudy decides to crossdress again! oh how confusing.
also i miss ky, hows he doing?
Ryu890 Featured By Owner Sep 24, 2012
*nods* I could hardly even tell she was.....until I scrolled down. Its so....weird.

Then again, Aiken...heck....blah.

Nya. This makes sense. Look at how uncomfortable it makes us to see Rain as a boy? And we're the accepting ones. Now imagine how Aiken would have felt. Blah....

For what little its worth, the popped-up-collar-thing DOES look decidedly my opinion anyways.
Musicallover1234 Featured By Owner Sep 24, 2012  Student Writer
I was thinking that Rain is so sweet that she really does want to hurt him or face possible rejection.
Musicallover1234 Featured By Owner Sep 24, 2012  Student Writer
Oh well, i guess she couldn't quite do it, but i understand. The thing is that its only going to make it harder for Rain in the end. Especially if her friends come over and see her like that, still i hold hope that Rain will eventually come out to her family. The thing is even dressed as a guy she still looks cute, but i kind of feel sorry for Fara she really does care about Rain. Well this should be an interesting turn to the story, but i get the feeling that Rain will slip up and have to tell him. Well i guess will see as the story goes on.

I- Wait ho- This is gonna end well. Wouldn't his feminine actions point him out a bit? Then again, he could just act neutral. I can't imagine rain or Ryan liftin' weights and doing stereotypical masculine things...

As expected as first introduction to the brother, but I am sure the hill won't be too hard to run over when Ryan will be more confident in himself around his big brother.

Ryan Mode... is like a Tomboy Rain.

It's actually strangely cute (being that she's going back to trying to look like her birth gender, but still looks adorable in a feminine way)

And I see dissension with those disappointed in Rain's choice by going Raiyan. If the hair grew golden and spiky, then we'd have "Super Raiyan."

But, well, Aiken seems to have caught onto the whole Bishie phenomenon that gets plenty of straight girls wild...
adragonknight Featured By Owner Sep 24, 2012
I would think this as a good idea actually, depends on how it is done.

Considering they have not seen each other for some time I think letting her (Yes, her.) brother kinda ease into it, let him first see the brother he remembers having and then introducing him to the sister he has.

Then again, what do I know? Could be that that is an even worse thing to do.

We've all had this moment, i think. My mom and big brother used to be like that towards me a long time ago. It's just awkward when anyone says things like that.

Ohhh, she looks so uncomfortable here, and totally guarded. I imagine probably because she IS uncomfortable and guarded... I have absolutely no idea how difficult it would be to come out to your family but I hope Rain manages it soon. Go Rain! We're all behind you!
Animasword Featured By Owner Sep 23, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist when Rain is Ryan she is still fairly androgynous, which makes sense since this is probably as masculine as Rain can be/wanted to go.
As for the decision...I'll admit my feelings do match Fara's, but it makes sense with Rain's character and I guess it is hard for her to just come out and say something that huge. It'll be interesting to see how long she can keep this up.
On2XSecretProbation Featured By Owner Sep 23, 2012  Hobbyist Writer
I'm not surprised...unfortunately...coming out to your family must be super tough though.

I just hope Rain doesn't think Maria will do the fake girlfriend thing again just to fool her brother...At least I hope she won't...

"Introducing the Adventures of Ryan, the Totally Norm-…"

I was doubled over laughing thanks to that.

As to the comic itself, I've seen women wearing this exact set of clothes, so I don't see it as the dramatic masculine signifier shift that some other folks seem to. She may be coming out (so to speak) in generally androgynous clothing just so her brother isn't shocked at seeing her in a skirt unprepared, and she's actually set to make a full confession about her gender.

Though that would preclude wacky hijinks that a chapter could be built around, so I might be overly optimistic in this supposition.
14bj337 Featured By Owner Sep 24, 2012
Woah, I never even considered that possibility. Now THAT would be a massive subversion - just as hopes are dashed, they're raised back up suddenly, making the revelation all the more dramatic!

That's... that's just sad to see. That's almost as painful as when I went over to my boyfriend's house and had to call him Abbie... that hurt so badly, and I could see it hurt him too. My fears were confirmed here. I just hope my boyfriend has the strength to come out when the time is right.

...I guess maybe if I stare long enough she looks like a boy with long hair? At first, I thought Aiken was just being dense.

Lord, that's...gotta be hard. I always hated going into boy mode for any reason, back when I still did that. It's gotten harder to do, now XD

That said...I'm kinda sad Rain didn't come out to her brother, but...I can totally understand why she'd hide herself...
