RAIN p215 - Courage by JocelynSamara RAIN p215 - Courage by JocelynSamara

Crazy page. So many points I want to make! Iíll focus on the big things.

Brother Arthurís explanation of how he figured it out actually has a second purpose, moreso from a technical standpoint for me as the writer than anything plot-related. For the longest time, I got really hung up on how Rain could be enrolled in a school like this when her legal name doesnít match the name she goes by. After all, Iím relatively certain such documents must be presented upon enrollment; the fact is, I donít know if in real life anyone COULD go through high school without ANYONE knowing who they are. Members of the faculty would probably have to know. Itís a minor, forgettable hole that one could easily overlook because it IS fiction, but I guess it bothers me. Hence, this sort of explains it. Sort ofÖ ishÖ

Also, I changed the dialogue SO MANY TIMES on this one. This page may have won the award for most dialogue rewrites of any in the story thus far. From Rainís reaction, to Brother Arthurís speech, I probably spent a literal day pacing around my apartment working out this dialogue. Itís still a little campy towards the end, but I think I generally like it for the most part.

Anyway, big important page. But I hope you all like it.

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

Also, if you enjoy the comic, please vote for "Rain" on TopWebComics!

Arthur's brother's name is Will, actually.  It says so on the previous page.

Wasn't paying attention but how is rain so short (for a biological male that is).

It's genetic.  She comes from a family of people who are of below average height.

Read this far in one day, and while I always liked Arthur from what little I had seen, you know those small things like dropping the name lists etc.

This tough? Yeah sorry Rudy, Arthur just bitch slapped you away from "Turai's favorite character" spot. He bitch slapped you hard.

This guy is...YES..I don't know, I lack words. Yes he was prob a dick to his brother, but he's regretting it enough to break the school rules and possibly loss of his job just to make amends.

I don't know why, but damn I like this char.

Also, can you really be expelled from a school in the US for Homosexuallity? America you scary.
Wiinner159 Featured By Owner Oct 14, 2013
Even though this is a couple months old I will still say, no you can't get expelled from a regular school for being gay, (if so a couple people I know wouldn't be there) but for a Christian school like that yeah it's possible, as like Brother Arthur said, homosexuality is viewed as a sin, why Rudy hasn't already been expelled... well this IS fiction after all, so Jocelyn can get away with that

OMG, you made me cry. Wow, that's not easy. Some folks have terribly complex lives. Mine isn't, But I have friends who don't know how to come out. Or which way to swing. Or how to dress. People can be soooo cruel.

This is certainly one of the most beautifully touching scenes I've read.

You can tell Brother Arthur's getting serious when his eyes completely disappear.

Seriously, though, this really is a game-changing page. While Rain never explicitly validates Brother Arthur's suspicions, having failed to deny them (and having listened to his reasons) can basicly be considered implicit validation. This would make Brother Arthur the sixth person who's "in on" Rain's secret (eighth, if Heather and Kylie are counted, but I don't count them, because they still only have suspicions). Suddenly, he's a major player (not primary-character "major", mind you, but certainly in the top percent of secondary characters).

The last two pages develop Brother Arthur's character more than the preceding 213 pages combined. Until this point, he'd just been the "nice teacher" archetype. From these two pages, however, we learn about his family, about his regrets, and about his goals. Wracked with guilt over his mistreatment of his brother, he seeks to atone for his wrongdoing by helping out those whose education, friendships, privacy, and very identities are in jeopardy. It's more than just atonement, though; Brother Arthur believes that it would be wrong for Rain and Rudy to be thrown out of school just for who they are, so he risks his own job and reputation to protect them, to do the right thing. His humility, self-sacrifice, and desire to protect those who are most threatened stand in dark contrast to his purported abuse of his brother. He reminds me of Briony from "Atonement", Amir from "The Kite Runner", or Henchard from "The Mayor of Castorbridge" - literature is rife with people who have done wrong, and learn, as Rahim Khan put it, that "there is a way to be good again". It may be cliched, but somehow, it never gets old - personally, it's one of my favorite character types.

One more point of interest is Rudy's indignant reaction to Brother Arthur's statements, which he assumes to imply blackmail. Knowing Rudy's character, blackmail is something he'd never stand for - he'd sooner announce his secret over the PA system than let someone else lord it over him. Rain, however... if there were someone who knew her secret, and were using it to blackmail her, I get the feeling that she'd acquiesce. Rain is strong, in some respects, but she's still really shy, and she doesn't want to create problems for others; forcing Fara to lose her job, and relocate again, I don't think she could live with herself. If Rudy and Rain were blackmailed together, though, I wonder just how it would play out. Would Rudy let his secret be told, even if it meant that harm could come to Rain? Or would Rudy give in to the blackmailer to protect Rain, even if it meant hiding who he is and doing things he doesn't want to? I can't say that I know which way he'd go... regardless, blackmail isn't an issue - for now, at least (dun dun DUN!).

"Big important page" correctly describes what this is. It's texty and it knows it. It's a page of serious emotion and revelation, promising new developments and shaping the story as it goes along. Given the insistence on keeping Rain and Rudy's secrets, I wonder just where the relationship will go. Will they keep liking one another, as they do right now? Will it just disappear? Will it become a smokescreen, like Maria has with Gavin? I don't know, but either way, this really is a shocking end to "One Week"! (Alright, it's not the end... but if more drama is in store, I think I'll have to clean my spattered brains off the keyboard after all the times my mind gets blown).

This is a very good page and a very strong and important one too. I like the comments being said about Ryan being a typo the fact is that now a days its possible to have a male sounding name for a girl an example is Shawn it is used as a girls name. Its nice to know that Brother Arthur is such a nice guy and maybe he will find his own courage as well. But know Rain has some help which will be nice.

I have asked a priest at my school and he has stated that transexuallity is not actually a sin.
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner May 9, 2012  Professional Writer
This all depends on who you ask, actually.

Brother Arthur's statements about transsexuality and whatnot being “sins and expulsion-worthy” are entirely accurate according to MY experience in a Catholic school. Not that I’ve ever seen it happen (if anyone besides me was trans, they were just as good at hiding it as I was). But I do recall one guilt-inducing day where they basically handed out pamphlets to all of the students that listed every single possible thing that could possibly – even loosely – be considered a sin. I don’t buy it myself (obviously, just look at the comic I write), but at the time, that wrecked me.

Moral of the story: You happened to speak to a cool priest. The popular opinion is that transsexuality is a sin. Some people, like your priest or Brother Arthur, would disagree. But it is still pretty largely frowned upon.

It's a great page, congrats on writing it~

Even though my official name still is male, listings show me up as 'Rebecca' at my school (I specifically asked for it). The administration, and a few teachers, are the only ones to even know my birth name.
That being said, it's an art school in France. I have no idea whether this kinda open-mindedness is standard.

I love how Brother Arthur isn't being portrayed the way religious people are typically portrayed in the media.

I know plenty of religious pastors that are very supportive of people with whatever issues they're going through. It just happens that the loud obnoxious ones are the ones that get press coverage.

Okay, this is Arthur's crowning moment of ... something. Not sure what yet. But it's awesome.

Also, it occurs to me to wonder ... why the hell did Rain's family put her in this kind of school to begin with?!
