RAIN p178 - The Center by JocelynSamara RAIN p178 - The Center by JocelynSamara

Told you it was a short one. ^_^

We wrap things up here with:
Emily and Chase still fighting, and with no end in sight.
Kylie, still unsure of himself… and now unsure of Rain as well.
Rob and Drew’s friendship becomes awkward.
Rudy answers ALL of Maria’s questions.
Gavin bids farewell after helping in the only way he felt he could.
And finally, Rain is left to wonder what the next day could possibly bring…

By the way, I’m not crazy about the narration here. To me, it feels tacky. But having short snippets of dialogue was actually worse. And not having any words at all just made it look horribly incomplete. So I feel like I couldn’t really win with this one. -_-

By my count (unless I'm overlooking something), Rain cries in 11 of the 15 completed chapters to date (12 chapters, if you count the one where she cries on the chapter page, but incidentally, not the chapter itself).  In fairness, a few of those are played for comedic effect, but I'd still count them.  Overall, Rain's kind of a crybaby. XD

Eh, it worked well. A bit out of place, but thats really just because you don't 'normally' do re-caps like this.

It sounded nice, but would have been nicer if Rain had more epilouge narration things.

I can understand why this page isn't the best, especially since it only was a recap on the the "Aftermath" in a way, it really is the only ending even if it seemed kind of just there for Rain to look contemplative. But I do hold hope that this is going to lead to another bizarre situation that no one can really understand can happen outside of comics.

I don't really have a place to put this, but I thought the end of the chapter was a good spot. My favorite part of this was the conversation between Kylie and Anti-Fara. It was a strange because I call it a sweet moment, even without the show of support that you get from Fara. It really makes me wonder if Ky might actually just do it and be honest with Rain and hopefully get some kind of love back. But i also enjoy that of all the people to really guess wether or not Rain was actually a boy would be the anti-fara. I mean really who would guess that. The only part I really didn't like was Emily and Chase, I guess simply because they got 1 page and they did what we expected them to do. But either way, I enjoyed this page as a chance to just slow down and catch your breath, as well as just allow the characters to really just ask themselves "will any of this work out". And for hopes, that would be a beautiful thing.

That reminded me of the monologues at the end of each episode of "The Wonder Years". Nice tidy cliff hanger :)

Huh. That was a pretty poignant conclusion.

That's all I have to say. :)

Wait... the narration was by Rain? I could've sworn we were reading Puddle's thoughts!

Seriously, though, this ending came even sooner than I expected it to. I really thought it would end with either Kylie's revelation to Rain, or Rain's revelation to Kylie; instead, Kylie is left mulling. Grrrr... we are left in suspense for at least one more chapter!

Still, I think this is a fitting end page. The narration style is unique; I think this is the first page where the thoughts of one are overlaid upon the images of others. I like how it goes through the various scenarios of the chapter: Emily and Chase bickering, Kylie questioning who he is and what he should do, Robert having difficulty listening to Drew's crisis, Rain and Maria dealing with their parents, and Gavin and Fara trying to make Rain feel better. And, of course, Rain herself. This page at once acknowledges the importance of the secondary and tertiary characters and brings the focus back to our heroine. It's amazing how aware of her situation Rain is, in that she feels change is imminent.

In the end, I think this chapter was one of revalation (Drew reveals his new attraction, Rain reveals her insecurities, Rudy reveals his motives, and Heather reveals her suspicions), whereas the last chapter was one of action (Maria confronts Todd, Drew meets Kylie, Fara goes on a date, Rain descends into madness, and Rudy kisses Rain). A very good chapter; it was well-paced, it gave a look at the various partigoers on their seperate ways, and it provided a relaxing cool-down after the serious tension in last chapter.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the narration! Rain does tend to live in her head a lot, meaning she probably has a tendency to go in-depth and analyze every major (and sometimes minor?) event in her life. This was established back when she was telling Gavin about wanting to be a girl from a young age; there was clearly a lot of time spent thinking put into that. This is just one more example. ^_^
