RAIN p148 - Toast by JocelynSamara RAIN p148 - Toast by JocelynSamara

The truth about Rain’s parents - moreso her mother - finally comes out on this page. I feel there’s a good chance many people have suspected it for a while, though I am kind of relieved to finally be able to mention it in canon. I’m sure some people will rag on me about “how cliché it is that the main character’s mother is dead”, but I would kindly remind those same people to keep reading. ^_^

I'm not reading ahead.

I'm nervous about this guy, though.

Might have something to do with one of J.A.Jance's "Joanna Brady" mysteries, though...

I didn't expect that has happened to Miss Flaharty to have been dead. To be honest that really does make her more of an enigma to me. Since she was in the very first panel of the comic she must still have a dominate post mortum influence on Ryan/Rain's life (I refer to Ryan because of length of time). And since we never technically saw her face I guess it would make since that she has passed, though the lack of seeing her face may lead me to believe that their must be some type of sadness surrounding her death that I'm sure effected her children in someway considering that they no longer live together and they don't seem to see each other much these days, as well as Fara's legal custody of Ryan instead of Mr. Flaharty.

And personally I don't see the twist as cliche, only if its put in a certain context. you didn't start the story with "My mom is dead, so feel sorry for me", holding back that piece of information and talking instead about her children and her ex is the best way to enter into the notion that she is dead. In someway, it does explain so much, but still leaves us unsure about how the Flaharty family has fallen.

Darn it, Lynn! You told us no one was going to die! *sniff* What am I supposed to believe now?

Seriously, though, this page finally reveals the truth about Rain's parents; or, at least, a bit more of the truth. The "circumstance" which caused Rain to move in with her Aunt was her mother's death (assuming that Aunt Fara is telling the truth, and that she is indeed correct; however, I have no reason to doubt either proposition). Also, I feel like this may be the first use of Liriel Flaherty's name in canon (not sure, too busy/lazy/tired to check). As for her father, we learn that he may not have been a good parent/husband (at least, based on Fara's perception).

Aside from revelations about Rain's family, we get to see more of Colin and Fara. Colin's response upon learning that Fara's sister is dead seems genuine to me, giving him a bit more credibility. And of course, he's still a charmer (he pushes, but not too hard). As for Fara, the page brushes upon her possible difficulties with Liriel, as well as her desire to find companionship in someone else.

Another wonderful page! It opens up the past and peers into the future, while remaining firmly rooted in the present! Or something like that.

I've been very particular about my wording, actually. I always say, "Nobody is murdered in this story." And I can assure you, Liriel was not murdered (and being over five years ago, it technically happened BEFORE the story).

Yes, I realize that's very sneaky wording, but the keeps everything I've said thus far absolutely true. ^_^

Well, even if you had said "nobody dies", it could still be considered true. Liriel only appeared alive during the prologue, and not during the main story, meaning that she died between the two. Since her death isn't featured in the story (only alluded to), it could be considered outside-of-story.

And quite a good job on the sneaky wording. This does, however, open up the possibility that someone will die during this story. While "Rain" is generally light and fun, it can be serious at times, so... I'll just wait and see where this goes. After all, even if you have a plan in mind, a story can go in unexpected directions. Heh heh.

I cannot get a read on this Colin...
I only find the dead mom thing a bit weird because it makes think of The Dead Disney Parents Hole. But it totally makes more sense than the mom just letting Ryan go live with his aunt...

I must not be paying attention, for some reason I thought we'd heard from the mother in recent years. X( Must be thinking of siblings or something...
And I LOVE cliches! Not when a story is just full of them, or it's a bad cliche, but I knowingly tend to use them a lot when I write.

Nah. The mother has only really been shown in the first three pages of the comic. We've seen Rain's sister a couple times in Chapters 2 and 4 though.

I also LOVE cliches! I mean, there's a reason they're used so often, right? It's like you said; it's just the matter of using the cliche well versus using it BADLY.

I don't know, Lynn. I'm sure you're right about people SAYING some of your devices are cliche, but when it comes to story telling, your character's lives are what they are. Doesn't matter if it's familiar or not, if that's their story, that's their story.

I'm loving it either way

Why, thank you. ^_^

That's basically my philosophy. I've never dodged using a plot device or twist simply because it was cliche. If it works, it works.

its not cliche, what would have been cliche would be to have rain's mother be in the hospital or another daft reason for her being gone. like 4Kids does.

Why do I get some kind of weird feeling that Colin is the father of or is related to Kylie? I know it's without any basis but I get this weird vibe about how small this comicverse is.

Why would people bother calling it cliche?

We've already seen her mother raising them, when they were little, and people speak fondly of her. So that's the only reason you can use.

Simply put, people are nitpicky. Anytime I do something in the slightest bit cliche in any of my stories, someone ALWAYS calls it out like I didn't know. So, I'm calling it first this time. ^_^

Anyway, I like using cliches. It disarms people into thinking they know exactly what I'm doing. And then they're wrong. :XD:

Well now, that tactic has become cliche too these days. In fact...everything is cliche...oh gawd..there's no point in writing annyyytthhhhinngggg! Xo
*chuckles* You should see all the threads about cliche's and tropes on the nanowrimo forums. Something every writer needs to come to grips with is that everything has been done or said before somewhere, in some combination. What matters is not whether it has been said before, but if it has been said well, and with your voice.
