This is also based (loosely) on actual events. About six years ago, before coming out to my friends, I went as a “girl” for Halloween (to test the waters and see how accepting they’d be). Apparently, I passed so well, that a friend of mine didn’t even recognize me and proceeded to flirt unknowingly. Though I was certainly flattered and pleased to know I passed so well, I felt obligated to kind of point out who I was to him. I probably COULD have played along for a little while, but was afraid that might turn sour later if I did.
To this day, that remains one of my more interesting trans experiences…
On a side note, probably about a year ago (it was before I actually began posting Rain), I held a mini-contest asking people for really BAD pickup lines. I meant to actually use it sooner (Drew was originally going to say one of them to Rain back on page 10 [link]) but I opted against it to draw attention to her voice at that time. Still not wanting to put everyone's effort to waste, I decided to have the very same character use one here and now. Panel 1 here now features one of the tamer ones, submitted by ~dolphin64575. Mind you, I got dozens of really good REALLY BAD lines from back then, so more may come out of Drew or other characters in the future too.
Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.
Are you angel?
because I want to have BEEP with you.
Many years ago at a World Science Fiction Convention, i spent some time talking to a woman from England. I picked up fairly quickly that she was MtoF (i later found out she'd had the full reassignment surgery) - i think it was her wrists.
I didn't mention it and it never came up in conversation.
A friend came along and joined the conversation. I had to go do something else (take second place in the trivia contest, i think).
Apparently they talked for some time; i'm not sure if he made a move or was about to when he realised ... but some hours later, i ran into him looking rather shaken, and he asked me "Did you know that was a GUY?"
I managed to not laugh.
I'm...probably a bit too open....I think I may have told too many people already....
And that is a very good story you told, though I do admit it would've been mean to play along like Rudy did. Best to tell them now before you get their hopes up I guess. but at least you got to do it with this page, that should make you happy.
And hopefully dolphin is happy knowing you used such a cheesy pick up line. Never fails to amaze how men try to impress girls.
Seriously, though, THE IRONY. THE SEEPING, DELICIOUS IRONY. I really do like Drew's cheesy pick-up line, as well as the "three walls are enough"-type annotation in the first panel. I love how Rudy goes along with it, and how Aidyn and Madison understand what's going on. Drew's realization in panels 5 and 6 represents the conclusion of a joke several pages in the making; it took a while, but it was worth it! I love how Drew's confidence and excitement gives way to reason and shock. The last panel adds insult to injury, as Drew's heterosexuality is called into question... by the one openly gay student in the school. Drew's end-of-page shout shows his feelings at being the butt of the joke. Still, it's not like I feel sorry for him; his end situation is the result of his own decisions, not of external forces. Also, it ended exactly opposite of how he hoped, creating the wonderful humor in this situation.
The art also contributes to the humor of the overall joke. I like the addition of the flower, especially with how its withering ties in with Drew's revelation. Rudy's sparkles and italicized speech add to the character he puts on to prank Drew. My favorite part, though, is Rudy's face in panel 2. One of the strongest artistic points of "Rain" is the facial expressions, and Rudy's face emphasizes the mischief he's planning.
This page functions as an end to a joke several pages in the making; irony becomes humor in an awkward and wonderful setup.
And Drew is bad at pick-up lines...

It's a bad pick up line but I've heard worse
And wow, one of your friends didn't recognize you? Hmm. What'd they think when you pointed out who you were?
Also, Drew looks like he came at the end. :3
when you say something but dont mean it.
I can only imagine. Went in drag back in college for similar reasons and fooled several people at the party. Some girls even thought I looked like a supermodel (god only knows why, maybe the height). Don't think I passed at close range though, especially as I was far too self-concious and not even attempting to change my voice. Thank god no-one tried this though >.<
