RAIN p121 - Oblivious by JocelynSamara RAIN p121 - Oblivious by JocelynSamara
(I may early post at around this time for a while. At this time, it's just easier for me; at least it remains on the same scheduled day this time though.)

First - [link]
Prev - [link]
Next - [link]

Neither Rain nor Kylie have very good “transceivers”, apparently. But then, it’s already been established that neither one of them has ever known anyone else like them, so I guess that’s to be expected.

Then we have Fara who is obviously fully aware of both parties’ true identities. I’m sure she’d like to spell it out for them; I mean, it might make things easier for both of them if they knew someone else in a similar position to confide in. Fara is, however, much too amused by the way they each overlook the other’s gaping holes because they’re too busy trying to cover up their own secret.

Really, it IS kind of freaking adorable. I just wanna pinch both their cheeks. XD

Final note: Holy crap, a background. I’m never going to hear the end of this…

After reading the story through, I am kind of surprised that Ky stays under-wraps as long as s/he (Depends on the day right?) does.

I feel for what Rain is going through. I am an 18 year old guy and this is actually the first time that I've opened up to anyone. There are many things that have made me not want to open up to anyone I know personally.
My dad and brother are pretty judgemental. Though I am pretty sure my mom would be okay with it.
My best, not to mention my only friend, is very judgemental and close-minded. He has been my best friend for 8 years (he is also my age) and, as Rain felt, do not want to lose him as a friend. I also go to a Catholic High School (for a 5th year) which probably doesn't help with the fact that I am transgender. The people, especially the teachers seem to be open minded to the fact that some people are just born this way, whether it be gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual. There is also a problem that has to do with my body. I am 6'3" 255 lbs and have a very masculine build/frame. This actually feels really good that I am opening up to somebody.

By the way I love this story. It shows the struggles that transgender have to go through. I wish everyone can see this so they know being transgender isn't a choice or the easiest thing to deal with, socially and personally.

I KNOW IT'S AWESOME RIGHT?
I was in the same boat a few months ago! I read through all the pages up to the cover of chapter four (which was the last page Jocelyn had produced up to that point) in one day. I remember how hard it was waiting those first two days for the next page to come out! It's something I've gotten used to, though (it takes a while, admittedly).

YAY! I have been waiting for Rain and Ky to interact more. Fara is hilarious as always. Keep up the awesome work.

Oh, random question, which I hope isn't offensive: Does Ky bind when presenting as Ky versus Kylie? Because he (or she) seems to pass very well.

Also, yay for having a background. I think you do very well with them, despite what you seem to think.

Actually, I think it's a very reasonable question. Especially since I've meant to cover this in canon, but haven't been able to quite yet. ^_^

But yes, Ky binds. When presenting as "Ky", he also always wears that green sweatshirt to hide whatever the binding doesn't (Kylie's a little gifted up top [link] so it helps to both suppress AND hide).

I love Fara's comment "They actually can't read each other, how adorable" I do agree with that 100%. Though at the same time pretty vendictive that she would not just tell them who they were talking too. But I'm vendictive too so this is very entertaining XD

And I can admit this is pretty good for a plot point, it only makes me wonder if during this little costume run they will find out about each other. Hopefully not only open up more but also realize they need to purchase new transceivers.

Anyway, i think the background is pretty good considering how you had to compress it into two different panels. You really shouldn't be ashamed of it.

OH MY GOODNESS IT'S A BACKGROUND LOLOMGFDR I AM EXCITE SOMEBODY PINCH ME I HAF TRE TH O E *falls unconscious*.

Ahem. Seriously, though, this is only the second time we get to see Rain and Kylie interact, and yet again, their transceivers fail them! This time, we don't get to see any more of Kylie's interest in Rain (although it's questionable that it was even there in the first place). Additionally, this is the first time Aunt Fara gets to see Rain and Kylie interacting, so we get her input in panel 5. Her perspective is closest to the reader's as she knows both Rain and Kylie's true identities. While I like that Aunt Fara keeps the other's identity secret from each of them (don't ruin this for us, Aunt Fara! Misunderstandings are vital to both comedy and drama!), I worry that somewhere down the road, if Rain finds out that Aunt Fara's been keeping secrets from her, she might feel betrayed (which would make for an excellent development in their relationship, by the way). Still, it's cool to see Rain making a new friend.

Artistically... I must admit, I have mixed feelings. I'll start by saying this: I think backgrounds are necessary to almost any artistic depiction of reality. I like how they link "Rain" to the real world (rather than the single-colored subspace in which most of the comis seems to take place). I like how they help establish setting for the reader. And I like that you are working on your backgrounds. The problem is... they're still not very good. Some of the proportions are off, there is a general lack of depth, and everything is still rough. But please, don't let my words discourage you! I honestly think that, by drawing backgrounds more frequently, you'll get better at them! (by the way, I like how you added lines to the tree, rather than just making it one solid shape - it really adds texture!). As for the characters, they look as great as ever. I love Aunt Fara's facial expression in panel 5 (It's... adorable...).

All in all, this is a page of promise. It gives us Rain-Kylie interaction, and it opens the doorway for more! And finally, THE BACKGROUNDS ARE HERE!

Oh, I bet Kylie is going to dress as a girl for Halloween. :3

I'm still confused about Rain's living arrangements. Is that a house, or an apartment?

It's a house composed of two apartments; one upstairs (Rain and Fara's place), and one downstairs (Heather and Kylie's).

I guess I forget that that might seem strange to some people, but this is the sort of arrangement I've been living in for like seven years. I should probably clarify this a bit clearer in canon.

Wow, I had no idea of the true proximity between Rain and Kylie (and Aunt Fara and Heather)! Still, this raises a concern for me: how is it possible that it took at least a week for Rain and Fara to meet the people living in the same house as them? To me, that just goes beyond being reclusive to the point of being invisible! Just a thought.
But now that I know just how close they live, I can expect to see that much more interaction! How long until they figure each other out, and what then? It really sets the stage for future pages.

You'd be surprised how long you can not meet someone even when living in technically the same house. In my last apartment (in a house composed of four apartments), I NEVER met the people across the hall. I knew the moved in because my roommates told me they did, but I otherwise never knew they existed. That was at LEAST a year before we moved out. It's not really reclusive; it's just minding our own business, really.

Taking this a step further, I met my current downstairs for the first time (in two and a half months) yesterday. She said hello and apologized for how loud her dog can be sometimes. All I could think was, "I didn't even know they HAD a dog..."

Huh, okay. Since I've never lived in that kind of arrangement before, I guess I wouldn't know persoanlly. Now that I'm living in a dorm, though, I'll admit that I still don't know all of the people living around me (I've probably met them all, but I'm not that good at recognition).

Speaking of which, one of my favorite things about "Rain" is how a lot of what you write is from your own experience. It's always cool to see how the author's life is reflected in his or her work. Sometimes, the author's note is just as enjoyable as the page itself!

Haha, I really like the dog story! My family has a dog, and it barks at everyone and everything that moves. On our first day in our new (as of six years ago) house, she tore through the screen door. And just recently, we got a new screen, and guess what? SHE TORE THROUGH THAT ONE, TOO.

Come to think of it, so far Puddle is the only pet in "Rain". Maybe there should be more... like a dog? Or a cat? Or even another rabbit (because I am eager to do some Puddleshipping!)? Don't mind me, I'm just thinking aloud...

I think most decent writers use their own personal experience to at least some extent. The experience adds to believability and makes occurences feel more natural. In the case of Rain though, I would go so far as to call it a "pseudo-autobiography". Most of the characters are inspired by real people and the events actually happened (albeit insignificantly differently; for instance, I never went to high school dressed up, but most of Rain's school situations are quite real). I just dramatize things a little to make it a little more interesting. ^_^

Incidentally, I originally considered the rabbit being Maria's pet. I switched it to be Rain's though, as a means of very subtly developing her character. Rabbits are good comfort pets (which would benefit a depressed character like Rain), but they also very delicate animals that require a responsible owner (and Rain is very meticulous with most things).

As for giving any other characters pets, it's hard to say. Having shown inside Kylie's, Maria/Rudy's and Gavin's houses already, it'd feel tacked on if I gave them pets now. Although I could perhaps do a mini-arc where one of them GETS a pet, I suppose. Or if we ever see some other characters' house...

On a side note, I can totally see Ky(lie) crashing the Halloween party - if only to go round in costume and give Rain an extra friendly face to chat with.

The best part? the woman who did Ash's voice- Verionica Taylor- is so multi talented, she pulled off all seven voices for Nana's split body in Seven of Seven- Nanappe, the red colored, hot tempered excersize nut of the seven, sounds suspisciously like Ash does! [link]

...so yeah. I think Kylie's voice is kinda around that league of voice. (truth be told, it's when i heard her voice and said "Ash?!" that i thought of the connection. Then i remembered your thing about Ky's voice, and... well, my head clicked again, letting the memory stumble loose.)

I love Veronica Taylor; she's honestly one of my favorite voice actresses. I've never seen Seven of Seven, but I may have to look into it now. But I remember what an amazing stretch of talent it was for her to be Ash (and Squirtle, I believe) and then go to her work as Yukino in His and Her Circumstances or Amelia in The Slayers.

But yes, in a perfect world where Rain gets animated and put on TV, I want Veronica Taylor playing the voice of Kylie. I already hear it now in my head thanks to this conversation, and can't imagine anyone doing it better.

Heh, I'm happy to have been of service, Lyn. ^^

And yeah, Veronica Tayler did do quite a few awesome performances. And the squirtle you mentioned is from Team Go-Getters: Out of the Gate! A Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Cartoon. And yeah- when i decided to become interested in Seven of Seven, i heard Red Nana's voice and became excited- though i already said that. XD Anyone that was a fan of Pokemon season 1-8 will recognize some of Nana's voices.

Hats off to Veronica Taylor being the soul voice actor for Ky! XD

Wow they couldn't tell, i guess it could be because they don't know anyone else like themselves. I like how Ky nearly gave himself away by saying that he wouldn't want to wear that. My guess is that Ky is going to pick out a good costume for Rain, i would enjoy seeing Rain catching Kylie and forcing her to tell her true identity i think that would be very interesting.

Okay, so Rain wouldn't be able to tell (Male) Miles was actually physically female, either.

Not like either persona of Miles could tell, either. S/he can only decipher when s/he's dealing with a trap character forcibly cross-dressed against his will, but otherwise, completely clueless and not caring.

I guess in combination with Ky's realtive youth, he must sound somewhat pre-pubescent boyish if I'm not mistaken.

For serious? Veronica Taylor still does voicework? Feels like I really haven't heard her much in ages.

I admit I'm actually a little disappointed to know that after all this time, her latest role is just Tekken. Feels like such a waste of her talent to just go "Ya" and "Take this!" as per typical fighting game voicework...

Well, she's also a supporting character in the newest dubbed Yugioh Anime... who is a spazzy reporter that dresses like Mokuba for some reason... but yeah. And she also voiced Kosmos in Dissidia: Final Fantasy.

Really, it seems like mostly relatively obscure roles, sadly.

I know some people who it took more then 6 months until they figured out how they wanted to use it. Just keep going on it a little now and then, and the puzzle pieces will probably end up lining themselves into place.
