RAIN p115 - "This" by JocelynSamara RAIN p115 - "This" by JocelynSamara

Leave it to Gavin to mean something nice but still manage to sound like a dick in the process.

To clarify the “mask vs. cute costume” argument: they don’t really make a lot of girly costumes that have masks. Guy costumes get masks, gore and weapons. Girl costumes get sex appeal, glitter and accessories. I mean, there are always exceptions of course, but that is the majority.

Ryan probably grew up being stuck with cliché boy costumes his whole life, like reapers and vampires and devils or something. So Rain is longing for the opportunity to finally be something more feminine, like a princess or a faerie or what have you. You know, something cute. Something ultra girly that she couldn’t have ever gotten away with in her childhood.

Said costumes tend to be exceptionally “showy” though. Rain might want one because they’re decidedly girly, but at the same time, fears them for being able to easily out her if she’s not careful.

When I was little (reeeeeeeeeeeeeeal little) my mom dressed me up as carebears (the male ones) and unicorns (blue ones) and then I picked out my own costumes after about 5 years of the same black cat costume and then I was a werewolf and vampire. My friends and I just cosplay now and run down the street acting crazy

I know exactly how Rain feels. When I was younger I wanted to dress as a princess or Sailor Moon or a catgirl. Maybe one day I'll be able to dress like those.

if you know how to make costumes (with that much notification of the party in advance) it would be easy to whip up any sort of costume you like mask, no mask or what ever

unfortunately right now with me not dressing as a girl as i'm not being brave enough no costumes for me V.V

Rain's answer immediately made this a favorite page. But I'm sure we all felt that way at the idea of wearing a cute costume. I'm sure we all had that halloween memory where we see a costume that we utterly loved, but can't wear because it wasn't "okay". Sometimes it really did take all the fun out of halloween. And to look at the costumes for boys, I do agree that men glorify masks and really enjoy the blood. where as girls want to feel like stars in a pop princess kind of way. Though i can admit that a lot of "showy" girl costumes tend to be a bit out therem, at least most costumes aren't ment to make girls look like hookers. Though who would want to hide a pretty face beneath a mask.

Another reason why its awesome is Gavin's awesomeness. He's beginning to learn how to speak to Rain and put her in a situation that makes her feel confident in how she looks. I mean, how great is it a boy can encourage someone to play dress up and have fun with it. But I guess I point it out becasue its very nice to see the primary cast getting on the same page with Rain and her journey into transition. I mean, halloween is a time where we can take off our own masks to show the world for who we are. Makes it a truly magical holiday in a way.

Yeah. It's supposed to be kinda like she's growling at him for his comment in the previous panel.

The only time I dressed up for Halloween as a kid (I'm French so we don't celebrate it) I dressed up as Babar. I don't think I would ever have wanted to be a princess or anything like that... I would have loved dressing up as a pirate though.

I don't blame Gavin for this he was just trying to help. I hope that Rain does get a cute costume she would probably manage to pull it off and look good as well, and i love Maria's face in the last panel it's like" I get to see the girl that i like in something cute yeah". The party is going to be very interesting.

That was a nice bit of logic by Gavin, but Rain's fears are also understandable.
I would suggest that Rain goes as Kamatari, but something tells advanced cosplay is a little hard to get together for a Halloween party (not to mention extremly nerdy in universe  )

D'aww. This page is quite high on the adorable-metre if you ask yours Koboldy.

Relatively new reader here, and besides declaring everything adorable I will also tell you that this comic is a very enjoyable read and, as many others, I am looking forward to the Halloween party and more. =)

I don't think he sounded like a dick. Maybe that's just because he's my favorite character...

He's my favorite too! Of all the characters, he's the one who reminds me the most of myself.
And I don't think he was being a dick, either. He was just being blunt, and perhaps a bit insensitive. But that's just part of Gavin's character.

The main page lists the title as ""This"". Confound that deviantArt!
Seriously, though, this is the first page of Chapter Five where we get to hear Rain's thoughts. Which is kind of an important part of "Rain". Anyway... Gavin, why do you have to be so blunt? He obviously wasn't trying to be mean, and I'm glad to see that Rain wasn't offended. Besides, he redeems himself by reassuring Rain in the fourth panel. He sometimes speaks without thinking, but... I think that's one of his most important qualities.
In artistic terms, something I just noticed about the fifth panel is the foreground-background effect. By giving Gavin the appearance of higher definition, you distinguish him from the background (something not done in any of the other panels, but that's understandable, because we see more than just the face). Oh, and on that same note, BACKGROUNDS! It looks like you're getting good at them, and I think employing the same variance of focus between foreground and background would be really effective in future pages.
Oh, and a note on the costumes... I can't believe I haven't thought of this before, but Rain should go as Kaminari. I mean, she's her favorite character from her favorite manga. And Kaminari is in-universe (non-trademarked), so she'd work. BUT you've already drawn Rain in costume, and I'm sure whatever you use has some sort of significance. We'll never know until the pages come out!

Yeah, when I wrote the first line, it was (ampersand)(quot)(semicolon)This(ampersand)(quote)(semicolon). But I guess it auto-transformed it for me. Hm...

This might sound kinda silly, but of all the spellings for the word, I mostly just like the way "faerie" looks the best. There's actually more to it, but that's the main reason. ^_^

Rain has never said that she's going. But she never said she wasn't going either. All she's really said is that she's feeling unsure of the whole thing.

Ok, just putting it out there, but if Marie or her lil' bro shows up in a KISS, Manson, Rob Zombie, or Dethklok themed costume that will be unfathomably epic.

Jack-O-Lantern, Ninja, Wizard, Turtle.

Those were a few of the costumes I remember from back in the day.

Loved the ninja one, though.

But I wish I could have donned a chicken costume at least ONCE. :(

...

Though I consider my first ever cosplay "Cute".

Granted, I was going as a shota doctor from an upcoming Harvest Moon game, so not the kind of "Cute" as discussed in the artist's comments.

...

Forgive me for thinking Rain suddenly returned to its fantasy roots and thinking they were standing in the middle of a forest via thumbnail viewing. ^^;
