RAIN p.98 - Weirdest Things by JocelynSamara RAIN p.98 - Weirdest Things by JocelynSamara

Please note: If you’re not a gamer, the following two paragraphs will probably be indecipherable gibberish. If you ARE a gamer, you'll probably appreciate this. Either way, most of what I’m about to say is purely supplemental anyway. All you REALLY need to know is what the page itself showed. ^_^

Anyway, I’ve mentioned this several times before, but there is no actual product placement in this comic. I do love me some parodies, though. There’s no “Nintendo Entertainment System” (NES for short) with games like “Battletoads” in this comic universe. But there is a “Funtendo Entertainment System” (FES for short), featuring a game called “Fighter Frogs”.

Silly parody aside, it’s basically meant to be the same thing. That is, a very hard but very fun video game for a console that’s well over twenty years old. Incidentally, the Funtendo would realistically be before Rain or Gavin’s times by almost a full decade (since the story is “present day”, they would’ve been born into the generation of the Funtendo 64 and the GeekStation 1). They must be pretty hardcore players to really appreciate such old-school classics though.

It's somewhat auto-biographical, if that's what you mean. A lot of what happens in this comic (particularly revolving around Rain herself) is based on my own experience.

Just so you know, as a gamer, I appreciate this.

Now to start, reading your commentary really does make me wonder how hardcore they are for videogames. Since the FES was a late 80s machine. Though my personal theory is that Gavin's mom owned it first and they just enjoyed it as well. and the fact that they would play FES games from despite the limited graphics and sound quality thus make me think they respect the difficulty of old school gaming. And ironically this page makes me feel old now since I remember being ten when FFVII came out and felt really weird to see that leap from 16-bit to polygons. And having actually played BattleToads once, I can definitely grew that if you aren't playing with a partner you are getting owned. Such a sad fat being a solo gamer sometimes.

But to get back on the story, Rain defined the page best with saying "this is the kind of things that's important to me." If I can transition and still have fun those important people playing Sonic 2 and Breath of Fire it would be a wonderful dream come true. Mkaes me sad I don't have those games and machines anymore. But I guess a long explanation wouldn't do justice to the page, so all I can say is what you sad before. That a "majority of transfolk are closet geeks" and sometimes that is sometimes what brings the world together for me

Makes me want to play some Funtendo now.

What time do you mean exactly????
I played with the NES when I was a kid, actually when I saw "fighting frogs" in the comic I thought it was a parody of the TMNT game that I used to play for hours, never herd of the "battletoads"
BTW I still have the NES although is really hard to make it work again but it sometimes does

It's a pretty notorious game, actually. I'm a little surprised you've never heard of it.

But anyway, it came out in 1991, and as far as I can tell, it WAS a Ninja Turtles ripoff. It's just a ripoff that managed to be pretty good overall.

Random cartridge for the NES (*coughcough* I mean FES) functioning as a plot device? That's "Rain", all right!
Seriously, though, this page is very reminiscent of the earlier page with the Mad GigaKaizerX action figure. Rain gets a chance to show Gavin how much she remembers, and how important their friendship really was to her. Also, both incidents give Rain the chance to see that Gavin really hasn't forgotten about her, or about their friendship. That friendship exists in each of them, but as a memory, as a part of the past. That is why the game cartridge is so important: it provides a link to a shared past experience. Rediscovering the cartridge, then, may be symbolic of Rain rediscovering their relationship. Either way, Rain and Gavin's new relationship will have to be built upon common ground, atop the ruins of their old friendship. This page shows them getting one step closer to a reconciliation.

After the huge success of the Funtendo 64, Funtendo then released a new disc-based gaming console called the PlayCube, correct?

Indeed, and then the Funtendo Yuu. Also, it seems that Funtendo has announced their newest console coming out next year: the Funtendo Yuu Mi. ^_^

Don't forget their portables either:
GameToy.
GameToy Pocket.
GameToy Color.
GameToy Advance.
Funtendo 2S.
Funtendo 2S Lite.
Funtendo 2Si.
And now, the Funtendo 3D-2S.

Clearly, I need a life. ^^;

I was wondering if you were going to put in a another segment with Gavin & mother before coming back too the only non-gray mass item to fall off of shelf and hit Rain.... Will have to admit Rain knows how to make Gavin look like a schmuck. Hope it all works out for the best by morning. Loving this story arc ^-^

The game is actually a blast, and way ahead of it's time in terms of how clever the level design was; in most cases, no two levels were alike.

It is however, INSANELY difficult. Of 12 stages, most people I've talked to have never made it past the third level. So, I guess I could see how certain people might have less than delightful things to say about it.
