RAIN p.96 - Overanalyze by JocelynSamara RAIN p.96 - Overanalyze by JocelynSamara

Gavin talks about his feelings; expressing everything that’s going on without flat out saying it. Probably for the best though, considering his mom seems to remember the “Old Rain” (ie, Ryan). He’s pretty good at skirting around the truth actually…

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

First off, I love Ms. Kurz expression in panel three, she just looks so "yuck" at her son's overanalysis.

But yeah, this is another reason the last page was important, it kind of helped Ms Kurz and Gavin to lighten up a bit to even talk about his feelings for Rain. Though I do admit that going with "Bryer" is probably the best desicion at the moment. Until the random chance that Ms Kurz runs into Fara and rediscovers the name Flaharty. But that is life and its really random.

The good thing about this panel is the fact that it is a good argument from not only the "straight" point of view, but also the point of view of the friend. The fact that its not against the view of gender as a whole, but how you cope if its someone closer to you. With the ever growing media people easily dismiss the issue until it ends up appearing close to home afterall. But it can be hard to get used to the new person that has come into your life, and sometimes makes everyone wonder if its even worth it. But you also showed us the best part of the "argument" through Ms. Kurz. that we aren't set in stone and that we are always finding out new things about ourselves and the people around us. And that despite the discomfort, eventual it will pass like a Heavy Rain (amazed the theme of Rain appears a lot in my comments). But that is my feelings of the page.

Really enjoyed that the dialogue didn't bore us nor was too wordy. It kept itself moving and informative throughout. And I'm still amazed that you haven't surpassed 10 panels in any page. you really have become better at this.

I thought it seemed kind of weird how much it seemed like Gavin's mum pushed him to have sex (or something really close) with a girl she thought he just picked up, but I also wanted to comment that I really like the dialogue here. It seems really, really natural. I didn't even notice it until I was finished reading, and then it was kind of a realisation: that seemed like a real conversation! :)

Also, lulz at the people calling Gavin gay or bi-. That's kind of missing the entire point of the comic. >.>

Alternate title: The Usual Prodding Mother...

I REALLY like this pairing, though, it's the usual but OH-SO-CUTE pairing of old best friends becoming new lovers. and they're just so cute and awkward together! ^^

I expect situational comedy to emerge from this page for no less than 3 chapters, and no more than one hundred and twenty nine.

Gavin said he liked her personality better. I don't think it means he liked her that way as a kid. I think it means she was his pal.
Now he likes her that way, but he also can't wrap his mind around the fact that he's losing his pal in the process. He loved his pal, and that guy has to die for Rain to exist. And he's realising that his best friend as a kid was someone who didn't even exist.
So while he likes Rain, he's upset with Ryan for lying to him when he's the one person he thought he could trust at the time. He likes Rain but part of him wishes he could have Ryan back instead.
Because Rain and Ryan are the same person, it means he likes her and is upset with "him" at the same time, and it's hard for him to compute.

That's the way I interpreted the whole thing. I could of course be completely wrong.

Gavin still needs some more Courage Wolf in his life. He does get brownie points for not spilling the beans to his mom, though. The last thing Rain needs at this point is another loose end.
14bj337 Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2011
Gavin comes within an "aherty" of spilling Rain's beans.
Seriously, though, I love how Gavin is able to coherently describe his feelings about Rain while avoiding revealing her true identity. And it's interesting that he says he likes her, but also kind of hates her. I think Gavin's really confused right now; he wants to rebuild the relationship, but he doesn't know where to begin. Even after hearing Rain's story, I think he still holds a little resentment towards her. Of course, this is counterbalanced by his old friendship and his new interest. I think there's a lot of dysphoria here: between the past and the present, between male and female, and between friendship and more-than-friendship.
I also like how close Gavin is with his mom. Their relationship reminds me a little bit of that between Rain and Aunt Fara (although admittedly, the characters involved are very different). This chapter develops Gavin's character beyond Chapter 2's "Jerky McJerkface" and Chapter 3's "Loud and angry Gavin". He seems to be calmer and more understanding. Aside from Rain, I think Gavin is the most interesting character in the comic, just because he's so dynamic. I love pages like these :).

Very interesting page, especially about how Gavin feels towards Rain. I am pretty sure that if he had said Flaherty she would have connected the two and asked what happened to Rain. And I understand the duality that Gavin is facing on one side he is losing a friend but, on the other side he likes this the new person as well.
Athils Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2011
I think I'm starting to like Gavin a little more. He didn't out Rain to his mother for his own convenience and that's a surprisingly uncommon thing, especially among teenagers.

Top right panel really brings out the anime in your drawing style. A little Naruto...? Hehe.
Other then that, i'd say it's a fairly unique drawing style that needs some polish. Way to be off-topic, i know. But oh well.

This is a little more interesting of a panel as far as the story goes, in my opinion. There's been a lot of "self-service" as of late.. What i mean with that is: Attempts at explaining transgenders and transsexualism with your characters.

I think it was last strip or so. It felt a bit non-organic, the way you decided to word it. Like it was you telling us instead of the characters expressing and telling it.
That isn't present in this strip though. This is worded well.

All this is just my opinion, so please don't take it for a fact if you think otherwise. I'm far from an expert at these things. Both the subject of transsexualism and writing.

Anyway. Keep up the good work.
