RAIN p.7 - Blending In by JocelynSamara RAIN p.7 - Blending In by JocelynSamara

Next - [link]

I can’t believe this is up to page 7 already. Where does the time go? ^_^

ANYwho, the first thing anyone’s going to notice about this page is all of the random uncolored students in the background. This was initially done on purpose so I could have random folks in the background without making unimportant people stand out too much. I ultimately dropped this idea when I decided to make all of the other students potentially useable characters (see here - [link]), so this is actually the only page that does this. I meant to go back and fix the coloring, but got sidetracked with my eagerness to move on with the story beyond here.

So, I’m just gonna go with the excuse that it’s symbolic; yeah, symbolic... that's the ticket! Rain is trying to pretend they’re not there to make herself less self-conscious. So rather than seeing classmates normally, she sees these almost transparent people. “They’re not real; they can’t be. No need to be self-conscious.” But then she enters her classroom to find two classmates (and future important characters as of next Monday) in color, as her mantra starts to wear off and she begins worrying just how difficult the coming year is going to be for.

That’s not bad actually, for having just made that up now. Significant, meaningful, and totally believeable. I’m kinda proud of that. Clever symbolism as an excuse for laziness - boo ya.

This is my first read-through (aside from some strips around where TVTropes threw me in), and I love it so far.

As for the lack of background character color...
Compare the popular we show RWBY, which, for the entire first season, had the background characters shown only as silhouettes. Heh. It's actually not a bad effect.

It's so crazy to compare these early pages to where you are today. You've improved so much! (not that this isn't good either, but you know)
(Yeees, I might be re-reading it all. Shhhhh!) ;P

Ever seen the anime Durarara! ? (yes, the exclamation point is part of the title)

The artists in that show do the exact same thing. I've never really seen it done other than in that anime, and it was kind of jarring at first, but somehow I got used to it easily. Anyway, it doesn't look weird on your comic, but maybe I only think that because I've seen the phenomenon before? I suppose it doesn't matter though, if this is the only page you do it on.

Anyway, cool comic. This page is as far as I've read so far, but I'll probably comment again when I'm farther into it. I really should get back to work...I'm supposed to be writing college papers.

Nya...thats going to be part of my own problem. I am a hyperactive ball of energy and weirdness. I stand out by my very nature. >_< Transitioning, a task that is supposed to bring me closer to being who I am, wouldn't be worth it if I had to sacrifice another part of who I am.....

In short, things are gonna be difficult at first. :P

I think it would have been significant, meaningful, and totally believable if you hadn't told everyone that it wasn't. ;p

I noticed the copyright, too; do you plan to update all 80+ pages every year? x.x

I love the fact that your subconscious keeps bringing him up! xD
Though does this mean that I should start my own Jacques Cousteau-like Rand M. Guy watch?

You could. That might be fun.

Maybe I'll just periodically stick him into pages like Where's Waldo or something. ^_^

Oooh! If the school does a Halloween-themed spirit day or something, he could show up dressed like Waldo! xD

Little did Rain know that being a true ninja is hard work.

At least she got down the oft-forgotten rule that ninjas AREN'T supposed to be noticed for their painfully flashy pyrotechnics.

I blame modern media...

Crazy media and their crazy interpretations of ninjas... ^^;

I guess when I think of it, Rain is kind of like a ninja. Quiet, stealthy, graceful, etc.. You know, everything but the whole "assassin of the night" thing.

Thank you. I'm glad you like her hair. It definitely makes her stand out. ^_^

And she's in twelfth grade. I can't remember if I've mentioned it now off the top of my head, but if you ever see blue collars and trim on the shirts, it means they're seniors in this school. Also, juniors are green, sophomores are orange and freshmen are red. You'll be seeing mostly blue though. ^_^

My own personal experience, actually. I went to a private school for a few years during my time in high school. They had a similar setup, but it was different colored blazers depending on the grade. I imagine most schools with uniforms probably do something pretty similar.

Our first glimpse at Maria and Gavin, this should be fun.

As for GCS=Generic Cutout Syndrom, sometimes it is needed since you are in a crowd and its human nature to not take in every face. To see everyone as just another set of eyes just shows there significance to th lead character. As Rain enters her new life there isn't many people she can trust so they are faceless, but she is afraid enough that she does notice every feature hoping to notice that one stare that will sentence her to damnation. It really is a frightening moment in ones life when all they had to worry about was ifhey were dressed okay to not get picked on or checked for that one zit that will be noticed in class. And since you already have somewhat of a plan on characters outsid the main cast I won't worry.

I never did this in school, but I did go out in public once, so I know that you seem to be the only visible person among all the people present. It really ways on your mind especially when you see so many women that just love to be the center of attention and it turns out the shy types are just as attention grabbing as they don't fit in the same mold. It really can be sickening when you think that every step you take will literally be your last.
Oh well, maybe that is why we need friends more than anyone, as a protection from our own self-made fear.

For any kid in high school, it's rough being the new kid. There's always something to be judged on. And it can be anything! Thanks to Rain's little secret, she has one extra thing to worry about... besides the fact that she too could get a zit or have a really bad hair day or something just like anyone else. It's a lot of pressure, everyday.

And yes, I think it's important for everyone, especially members of the LGBT community to have friends they can rely on. I don't think I could have ever gotten as far as I have (which really isn't very far, all things considered) without my everso open-minded and supportive friends. ^_^

Reply
:iconjocelynsamara:
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner Dec 10, 2010  Professional Writer
Panels 2 and 3 are blurry because... if I remember correctly I drew them too small and just ended up blowing it up. But then it looked blurry like that, so I realized I kinda had to redraw it anyway. Then like the color, I never got back to it.

I guess this page is all around kinda sloppy. I really SHOULD redo it. ^^;

Actually, the first thing I noticed is that Rain's internal monologue is in italics. Does that mean her thoughts sound like her adjusted female voice?

Based on my personal experience, yes, she tries. I find it's a good practice to try and think in my adjusted speaking voice to constantly remind myself which one I'm supposed to use. It's far from a perfect science, but it does help.

So, I figure it might work for Rain too. ^_^

...it's the last page of the week. ;_;

It's traditional in manga to ignore the people who don't currently matter!

It would work better, though, if you didn't try to explain but offered a cooke for whoever came up with the right explanation, than grinned and pointed out whoever came up with something workable.
