RAIN p.68 - Kylie by JocelynSamara RAIN p.68 - Kylie by JocelynSamara
NOTE: On SmackJeeves and Comic Fury, I’d named this page Ky(lie). But DeviantArt has once again thwarted my creativity with titles; this time, by not allowing parentheses in them. Oh, heaven forbid, DA…

Oh, Heather. That beer saved the side of your head from a royal whoopin’. Aunt Fara, “Defender of Transjustice” (I just made that up now) does not approve her trivializing comments. It’s clear that Fara’s getting uncomfortable and probably wondering if she should kidnap Ky(lie).

Speaking of whom, I imagine that kid is confusing a lot of people right now. Are we looking at a true female-to-male transsexual in hiding (or denial)? Perhaps he’s only playing along until he can get away from Heather? Maybe he’s even completely unaware of his own feelings on the matter? Or simply a devoted crossdresser? Any thoughts?

Rain, all characters and all other aspects of the story are copyright material belonging to me.

"Any thoughts?"

Gender fluid.

In fact, please be gender fluid. Gender fluid representation in this comic (and everywhere else of course) would be wonderful.

Genderfluid plot twist.  I totally didn't see that coming.  I was waiting for the FtM but this is good too.

Girls have it so nice... want to be boyish one day, go for it! Want to be girly the next, go for it! Nobody bats an eyelash.
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner May 23, 2015  Professional Writer
Except that Fara DID bat an eyelash.

And things are quite different for Kylie... ;)
DreamingxAshley Featured By Owner May 23, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I interpreted that as her being confused as to which sex Kylie is. What I meant was that girls can get away with dressing boyish and only the most dickish of people will say something. If a guy wants to dress in girlish clothing, OMG the world is coming apart at the seams and we better get the priest and some holy water!

Or maybe ky(lie) is just genderfluid? Sounds like it.... THEY LOOK SO CUTE THO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xD *fanboying little pansexual right now* Ky(lie) fanclub UNITE! Haha my bff Jessi is just like Fara <3

I second this comment.  :D

Being genderfluid and all, I totally get Ky(lie). It's really hard to be that way in public, though. Especially when I'm starting to slide from genderfluid to being agender...

Kylie seems to be the opposite gender-ed version of me. VERY happy to see you're exploring all sides of this issue. *T*H*A*N*K*  *Y*O*U*

If it's just that Kylie likes dressing as a boy sometimes and a girl sometimes, then she would be a crossdresser. If she actually feels male sometimes and female other times, then she's bigender. Does she feel like a boy sometimes and a girl other times, or does she just dress that way? Because it would make a difference.

bigender :la:

thats what i was thinking too...but to be fair; she's/he's Ky for most of the story so i'm a lil skeptical
Matthew4475 Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2013
That's a good point, but I think a lot of that is because Ky(lie) didn't want to complicate things with her new friends, so s(he) just kept presenting as male.
GodzillaRulz Featured By Owner Feb 20, 2013  Professional General Artist
that DOES make sense, now that i think about it

I feel like Ky is bi-gender, moving between boths genders fluidly depending on their feelings at the time.

Yeah, Heather is very lucky for offering that beer when she did. VERY lucky...
I'm not sure if Ky(lie) would count as transsexual. (S)He did say that (s)he alternates, so... Yeah, I don't know.

"Aunt Fara, Defender of Transjustice"... You have got to make a logo for that! XD
coffinstufferd Featured By Owner May 12, 2011
"You look tense, want a beer?" Haha that made me laugh. I imagined going to a masseuse and being handed a beer. Or maybe one of those asian doctors with all the needles...

OMGosh at all the labels in the comments that people have come up with these days. Do we really need a label for every single person? No two people are the same, even if they have the same label.
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner May 12, 2011  Professional Writer
This is an excellent point. I feel like I'm not even sure what several of the suggested terms are (although ironically, I suspect most of them are synonomous with each other). ^^;

My thoughts exactly! :D

I wish I could be like Kylie. I feel taped being locked into one or the other. Changing with my mood from male to female. But I'm a big fat man and I can't. Way coudent I have a body that could pass for woman.

Is that an androgyne? In a comic?! AWESOME!!! Also, I love the series so far ^_^

I will be interested to see whether Ky(lie) turns out to be FTM or genderqueer, or something else. Although not knowing does make pronoun use a bit more confusing. I like how you have such a diverse set of characters.

"Defender of Transjustice" is a great name for Aunt Fara.

Interesting page. And boy do i know the feeling of wanting to be the other gender sometimes, while wanting to stay the same gender sometimes. There are times where i really wish i could change back and fourth between genders.
So one question, are dresses all they have? It seems like that maybe they just felt like wearing something fancy because they look kind of fancy.
Well as for Kylie well that very interesting to consider is she really a crossdresser or a FtM so far to me it seems as thou she is just a crossdresser but that is because she hasn't displayed any dislike with her body or any kind of gender dysphoria yet. Plus it appears as thou she has done it for a while because she could most likely pass as both a male and female depending on how she dressed.
Dinadan-Ermorfea Featured By Owner May 11, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
My thoughts:

Maybe (s)he's bigendered? Not sure if that's the right term, so sorry if it's not - what I mean is (s)he identifies as both genders and can switch between the two (not neccessarily on a whim, more likely it'd be an unconsious switch).
Retro-Spudnik Featured By Owner May 11, 2011
I think Kylie is genderqueer, so (s)he's like... Both? XD I used to be genderqueer and like that.

To be honest, based on my own feelings, Ky may have some denial at the moment. Because 'sometimes' she feels like a man and 'sometimes' not. So the best way to describe it is that she might be a transman that is unsure of her feelings. This probably enforced by living with Heather. Sometimes even losing the motivation for simple psychological treatment. But this is a fate most of us deal with.

When you compare Ky to Rain, we as the audience a better since of how brave Rain is. That she is so sure of who she is and will not turn away from it. The one thing I guess I hope the most for Ky is that confusion will eventually pass.

I also love how you draw Ky (please tell me if I'm correct with the name by the way, also avoiding pronouns based on the confusion/denial theory). Ky obviously has some good muscle mass based on stance, as well as a sharp hair style and somewhat broad chin. This gives Ky a nice boyish look despite being on no hormones, but still feminine when dressed the right way. To be honest Ky has become one of my favorite designs for minor character. Looking forward to learning more about Ky as Rain continues her journey.

Hmm...interesting. Although I'm not sure why the confusion of gender is used with her and we haven't seen any of that with Rain so far. Why is Rain so much more certain in her identity? The fact she has so many people behind/supporting her? I'm sure you don't intend that transboys aren't as serious about their gender identity as transgirls but this is definitely a complication I'm curious to see playing out.
JocelynSamara Featured By Owner May 11, 2011  Professional Writer
Not at all. Though I did worry people might interpret it as such, I absolutely do NOT wish to imply one group as being more serious than another. Rather, there is a variable factor.

For example, I have known I wanted to be the other sex for as long as I've... known things. This is actually a common case among transsexuals. But just AS common, are people who might recognize that something is up, but aren't sure what. They may continue to be unsure for their entire lives! It has nothing at all to do with whether they start out as genetic boys or girls, but rather just who they are.

Incidentally, while I know far fewer transboys in real life, they're pretty much all VERY serious. But I also know a lot of transgirls, and some of whom are a little wishy-washy. Nothing is wrong with either, and neither example is representative of EVERY transboy or girl. People are different. It's just that simple.
majorkerina Featured By Owner May 12, 2011  Student Writer
Understood. That was my suspicious with the intent ^^. And yeah, same here with transboys. And yeah, people are all different. I am curious though if this character has a different feelings in private...quite intriguing ^^.

Kylie kind of pisses me off. I think it's mostly her pose in panel 5. Intentionally unsympathetic character?
