RAIN p.52 - Mallrat by JocelynSamara RAIN p.52 - Mallrat by JocelynSamara

Centerville Mall, yes. For a long time, I’ve been struggling to come up with a name for the town where the story takes place (even going so far as to consider just never naming it at all). I finally settled on Centerville, which is kind of throwback to an old, abandoned story idea of mine, “Everyday Life”. Although, that story was considerably sillier, as the town was surrounded by other locations like Uptown, Left City and South by Southeast Place. I won’t go that far in this, but I feel Centerville is generic enough to work. In a way, I DO sort of consider “Rain” to be kind of like the successor of that old story, so the name of the town just feels right to me.

Rain (and Aunt Fara’s) outfits were borrowed from the Dirty Picture gag pic I did a while back (except with a slightly longer skirt). Originally, I wanted to deck Rain out in her basic outfit, but I decided I really like her in yellow and wanted to see this again… which is odd, ‘cause I totally never like yellow.

Also, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: my favorite pages to do are STILL those involving Rain and Fara bickering. My maintain my stance. ^_^

I never noticed that Rain, like Fara, is a ninja. That or she's studied the Jedi Mind Trick. :XD:

In the end, Rain is a girl with time, friends, and something to buy. There for she became a force that will always be feared by parents on a budget everywhere.

Centerville really is appropriate based off of conversations of Rain being the new Everyday Life and its also appropriate based on my ionw personal experiece. I grew up living in a suburban kind of place and the big city would never be my thing. I also live with one family member as I try to adjust to this life. But either way, it just makes me connect to rain at least a little better.

Actually found myself glad you went with the yellow rather than the profile outfit. If it was more into the fall/winter months I would want that outfit. But since its still early in the year and its a casual moment at the mall, it just seemed appropriate. Shockingly, yellow just seems to go with her eye and hair. Crazy since I don't think I can like yellow either (at least to wear).

And don't worry, there was some of that bickering goodness on this page, its sad that Rain left to quick to notice it.

Eitherway its nice to see something positive right now with Gavin drama that has been going on in these erlier pages, doubt it will be the last though. As a writer these moments are important to balance out the drama. I also want to know if its legally okay to call this a Shoujo manga. I might call it Shounen because of the art (ala Azumanga Daioh), Seinen by mature subject, or even shoujo for emotional involvement. Just checking, doesn't make it anyless of a great story.

If I had not seen the past 51 pages, I would swear Rain was a teenage girl all along. She really does have that down. I do lke the bickering between her and Aunt Fara.

Centerville mall nice. I love how Rain is asking for money and how and eyes light up when she talks about the new Kaminari coming out. And of course how she just snatches the money out of Aunt Fara's hand, i reading that someone says Rain is acting more like a teenage girl every day and she really does seem to be. Great page.

Just out of curiosity, what time of day is it on this page? The sky leads me to believe that it's either sunrise or sunset, but I could be wrong.

It's sunset. It's Friday night, sometime roughly a few hours after school has ended.

Ah, I see. I had thought it was sunset, but, given Rain's disposition, she could very well be camped out at the mall at dawn so that she'll have to associate with as few people as possible once it opens. xD

lol true. I guess that is a female stereotype take the money and run. Thinking of the Jetson's opening credits where JAne takes George's wallet instead of the few dollars he pulls out for him

It's about time, right? ^^;

The car is actually supposed to be kind of dinky. But I blame my perspective on the page for the assumption that it could be big. If I drew the whole car (you know, if I could draw cars at all) there wouldn't be much more to it than what you see here.

Jesus, she's in high school right? By that point my parents had shamed me into asking for money (especially for the very few geek items I could find). It was partly revenge because as a child I used to charge them interest for any money they borrowed from me, my dad once owed me $200 for a ten I spotted him.

Oh, wow. My parents never "owed" me anything. Incidentally, I liked making my own money rather than using theirs, but if I asked them to spot me for something, they usually did.

I think Centerville really fits the mood of the comic nicely. Something about the word "center" just sounds right. I mean, after all, the ultimate goal here is for Rain's life to have some sort of stability. "Center" is a great word to describe what Rain is after...but maybe I'm trying too hard to be metaphorical here.

Asthetically speaking, I agree that Rain looks great in yellow, but I'm criticizing Aunt Fara's car color of choice. What kind of art teacher has a white car?

I had another thought as well. When Rain asked for money, I realized that she really has no source of income. It lead me to think what would happen if Rain were to get a job...

When you word it like that, Centerville really IS quite a fitting name. Excellent point. ^_^

As for the white car, I... well, I have no defense for that. You bring up a really good point. I'll have to do something about that at some point.

And your last point may be touched on later on in the story... :D

I love the subtleness of how Fara views her as HER and not he or any masculinity at all. I would love that in life with certain people =\... and how she is caring for rain so much, and understands that it can be hard in a bigger place and stuff. Keep up the great work Lynn!

Are we going to see the outfit that Rudy was wearing on his profile page?

And now to do some line changing:

Perspective? What's that? :XD:

I suck at backgrounds immensely, and I'm amazed I've been able to pull off the ones that I have. Truthfully, you may be waiting a while if you'd like to see a high quality perspective background in this comic. Sorry. ^^;

That's okay. I hadn't used perspective myself. But recently in my social studies class, when we were drawing covers for fake books, I was the only one who used something resembling perspective.

I just want to see one-point or two-point pop up every one and awhile.
