Gavin is stomping angrily in your direction. Should you be worried? Y/N?
Much like the boys of the previous page, the other female classmates have not been formally named in canon yet, so once again to make things for you: The freckly-faced redhead is Holly. The plump, spectacled girl is Debbie. And the snobby blonde ringleader (who actually HAS been named) is Emily.
It’s funny, because these are the kinds of girls I would’ve HATED in my high school days… and yet, I had so much fun with this page. I would even go so far as to say I regret not having had more opportunities to work with them quite yet (and the boys too, actually).
Sigh… Leave it to me to get attached to my supporting cast.
And yes. FaceSpace. It’s an exceedingly popular social networking site among teens… and practically everyone else too. What? Were you thinking it was called something else? I’ve mentioned this once before, but there is no actual product placement in this comic. That said, I’m all for parodies. ^_^
Anyway, one thing I love about manga is that it doesn't have a direct focus. Normally people would think its bad, but it does actually focus more on your primary characters.
To be honest, the interaction between Holly, Debbie, and Emily really helps point out that they have problem. To be blunt, if your leads were to say 'we have a problem' the audience won't take it seriosly, its called 'The Drama Queen Effect'. This effect can be annoying. But if you have your leads keep it between them and have minor characters talk about their drama, this in turn, makes the conflict seem much bigger than it is. Much like how when Gestahl's empire seemed more of a threat, way too many people whispered that they feared Kefka much more, as an example.
In addition, it helps bring foreshadowment. Emily seems to be guessing more right answers than the other girls, and you don't have to say it, but it does seem that Emily might stir up more drama based on Rain 'Rubbing her the wrong way'. Proof that even though the story has a main cast, you can't control everyone in your story.
Love the references you make. Though I LOVE your references to popular manga, other popular things are cool, like the infamous Facebook Myspace war. As well as how the world currently is, social negltworking sites being more of an advertisement for drama than anything. Debbie making this statement true by speculation.
Anyway, great moment away from the main cast. It really helps balance out the drama that is about to happen.
(again, thanks for the pep talk, I will make it up to you)
(Tell me about it. I don't think I'll ever catch up to ALL of the messages in my inbox anymore. I'm starting to think I should hire a secretary for the easier responses. ^_^)
Funny thing: originally, this page wasn't going to exist. The plan was to go straight from page 34 to 36, but I decided to add this one in MOSTLY because I wanted to show the female classmates again (as long as I already had the boys on the previous page). Some might argue that it breaks up the action (Gavin apparently stomps very slowly). But exactly as you said, I wanted to use this opportunity to establish how other people view the situation involving the main characters.
Ultimately, I'm glad I did decide to add this. It is slightly tangential, but I feel it really adds to the overall conflict here. ^_^
Aww :hu: really sorry about that. Just be thankful most of the comments aren't 4 paragraphs like mine are. That would be so mean.
And I'm happy to give input that compliments a decision. Trust me when I say that so far your decisions have been spot on throughout this production in making us care.
"Gavin is stomping angrily in your direction. Should you be worried?
