RAIN p.2 - Prologue 2 by JocelynSamara RAIN p.2 - Prologue 2 by JocelynSamara

Poor, little Ryan. :hug:

Let it be said, that Iíve read MANY webcomics in my time. And I have at least a dozen times seen a point in which the author attempts to put some serious moments into their otherwise ďjoke of the dayĒ comic for the purpose of directing the story. There are always a few understanding people who want to see where the author will take this direction (like me). But Iíve noticed some people actually get bent out of shape over it too ďbecause itís not what theyíre reading the comic forĒ.

So, let me get this out of the way right now: Rain IS a comedy, but itís also a drama. Just as in life, sometimes there wonít always be a punchline. (And then, sometimes the joke is in the middle of the page rather than the bottom. I like to spice it up, you see.)

Oh, and I'm not sure if this is obvious or not, so I'd like to add that the woman is "Ryan's" mother. The other kids are older siblings.

And 'just can't' is a strawman's answer.

Ryan really is a fitting name. I can imagine it being the name of a soldier to certain people and at the same time seems like the rght name for a delicate boy like Ryan. I can see the anti-Rain of the name too, but it is appropriate that you considered personality with names. I still consider Nathan from Tower Artist to be a delicate youth, so I picked a name that felt soft to me. Its no different from you that Gavin really is a masculine name, Maria mature name, and Rudy sounding more playful. I don't know how long it took you to name these chracters, but its a great variety of sounds.

I understand what your saying about the webcomics, Megatokyo (good read) recieved some criticism from that, and ost likely its going to continue with me when I begin posting. Interestingly, the illustrator also said that sometimes life doesn't have a punchline. Though I'm sure I'm going to be the reverse and that they will complain of my seriousness interrupted by humor. But with that said, remember your story is alsoa piece of your life. You can't lie about it and you can't hold back what needs to be told

I kind of expected that it was a family moment, and despite the situation, it really must be better to confess in front of family. Though no one questioned me, it was when my teacher thought I wasn't feeling right for saying that, that my family worried. It really was a troubling time and for that feel sorry for Ryan. Especially when mom pulls the "Don't worry about this phase" hug. To me, it really does give off the wrong impression despite intent. The intent of wanting a normal son despite it pushing away what they are saying.

Another worthy note about the name Ryan include its similarity to "Rain". I mean, it's not the sole reason, but it was definitely a contributing factor.

Fred Gallagher's "MegaTokyo" was a HUGE influence on me, and one of the main reasons I've wanted to do a webcomic for practically forever (that, and RPG World). The line "life doesn't always have a punchline" was actually kind of a nod to him.

That is good to know, I'm sure you thought of Rain first, though to me Rain (nature) is a duality of sorrow and beauty. So with the tone of the story it really is appropriate.

So you read volume 1 too, that is amazing to here since I kind of started aiming for webcomics after I saw Megatokyo (though I now add a few others to the list as well). Fred Gallagher must be happy to know he taught a whole generation of artists with such a sillyand now moving story.

*Sighs* It's like you're ASKING to be glomped. Particularly when you tell someone that it comes from personal experience.

Seriously, Rynn i'm going to have to glomp you, now. *Sighs and gets it over with... cutely*

It's your own fault for combining your personality with a character's! They're both you, now! :p

Oh! Sweetheart! :cries: Panel 4 is just too adorable! Mom sounds totally heteronormative :puke:

...my roommate is looking at me weird for talking at my laptop ^^;

Overall, parents suck. My dad wouldn't let me play dress-up when I was 12 because 'I was too old'

The mom technically means well, but yeah, she is pretty heteronormative. I don't think that went quite how she planned it.

Parents are a funny thing. When I was four, I told my dad I wanted to be a girl. He told me, "no you don't". Well, I proved him wrong. :P Funny thing is, fast forward to 18 years later when I actually formally came out to my parents, and now he's surprisingly supportive. Agonizingly uninformed, but supportive.

Heh. I talk to my computer too. Thankfully, I don't think anyone's noticed me doing it yet. ^^;

Just for the record: If anyone simply cannot or will not wrap their minds around the subject matter it would be best to not read it or, at the very least, keep your snide, ignorant comments to yourself.

Oh, have we met? I'm LittleLynn84's pit bull...and her friends' pit bull. That's how I roll.

I know I'm mostly preaching to the choir here, but NO ONE needs to be made to feel bad about themselves due to thoughtless comments from others about a subject that may also personally affect them.

That is all.

Enjoy the comic!

Thank you, my dear! I appreciate the efforts of my pit bull. ^_^

Incidentally, I won't tolerate any nonsense either. I want people to feel free and comfortable reading this. Critique or even a healthy degree of debate on more controversial pages is fine by me. But I will hide a comment (if not report it) if I deem that it is in poor taste.

I DON'T BELIEVE YOU. That woman is actually trying to sell Rain into sex slavery. The mother is dead, because all heroes in comics are always orphans.

SERIOUSLY, Ryan should be well past the mirror stage in lacanian psychoanalysis by the age of four, surely he is always showing signs of cognitive regression....

Just kidding, this was great. Although I'm sort of surprised you didn't have the sisters go for the bemused "Oh yeah, SURE YOU CAN, just let me dress you up!" route.
