RAIN p.1 - Prologue 1 by JocelynSamara RAIN p.1 - Prologue 1 by JocelynSamara
Prev - [lolwut]
Next - [link]

Nearly a year and a half after first announcing that I wanted to post Rain in webcomic form, I at long last give you… the first page! Da-da-daaaaa! ^_^

For those of you only discovering this right now, Rain is a slice-of-life/comedy/drama that follows the life of a teenage male-to-female transsexual named Rain (coincidentally!) attempting to go through her senior year in high school identified only as a woman. It's intended to be a comedy, but it will also touch on some heavy subjects including acceptance from family and piers, blind hatred, and many of the other difficulties faced by members of the GLBT community. I write a lot of stories to put it bluntly, but Rain in particular holds a special place in my heart, perhaps due to its semi-autobiographical nature.

So, this is the first of hopefully very many. I hope it’ll be a long run that everyone will appreciate. ^_^

(It should be noted that the majority of the comic is in color. I plan to use black and white for flashbacks though.)

I read allot of this comic  before, but toilet heads grieved me so much that I closed my account and lost the page I was reading.  As for me? I draw comics but I don't like detailed drawing, I will use your drawing style on digital art.

Now after stumbling upon this somehow (details are something I like to leave to myself) I found this to be a quite interesting and funny story. Now personally I'm an asexual male (in both ways mentally and physically) and I never really understood how hard a life for the people like Rain is as I am lucky and not only have very accepting parents and family but living in an accepting school as well and this really made me realize how stubborn some people are on these topics. And reading this definitely allows me to not only understand how hard these lives can be for some people but reading it also educates me about the topic of "sexuality differences" as I'm calling it ( Like I said I'm not very educated and don't know if there's a proper name for it) Also I do agree with this story, some people are born as the gender they truly aren't.

I understand if you'd rather not go into it, but if you don't mind, could you explain to me how one can be physically asexual? I mean, if it goes beyond genital loss, of course.

...Awkward question to ask  Sweating a little...

I think what I meant was that I'm mentally asexual, cause like you said I don't think genitals work that way and frankly, I don't exactly think losing my junk is gonna really prove anything. Also, Praise the Sun!!!

This is an awesome comic. :)
It's interesting to see how most of the characters act in this comic towards the main character.
Is the entire comic fiction or do you base some of it off of your own life if you don't mind me asking?

But why doesn't the previous page work? It's like you put it there to make a joke. :(

Woah, the description makes this sound so much like Venus Envy. Not saying it's a good or bad thing, just seems a really very specific niche (slice-of-life comic about a male to female transsexual trying to go through high school identified just as a woman, LBTG-influence).

That wasn't the original idea (I didn't read Venus Envy until I'd already been writing this for a while), but there are a few similarities. That said, they're still two pretty different stories. If you should continue to read this, I hope you enjoy it. ^_^

Just a note of interest: Aiken and Kellen's ages (in the present) are given as 26, while Rain's is given as 17, meaning that there is a (roughly) 9-year gap between them. Looking at the prologue pages, that's kind of hard to believe.

What's that? I should be finding something productive to do, rather than trying to find inconsistencies in Lynn's work? Clearly, you do not understand how I operate (heh heh).

Now that I look at it again, though... maybe there's no real inconsistency, and I simply misjudged their ages. It's hard to tell just by looking, anyway. Sorry to make a fuss about it. Heh heh...

In retrospect, I apologize for referring to young "Ryan" as "he".  It's not up to me, which gender Rain identified with at this point in her life.  In trying to be 'clever', I may have inadvertently offended someone - and for that, I am sorry.

Sorry to forget in page 1, I refer to the little Rain as he since he didn't begin the commitment yet, I have a weird habit of seeing little children as genderless until they young adulthood when they must choose what life they wish to live (no ignorence or insult intended). In fact, I guess you can say we are all genderless until we label ourselves as such.

I understand. It's a pretty tough call as is, considering Ryan's age. So, as I said to someone else, I think either pronoun would technically be fine given that she really DOESN'T know yet herself. For my part, I prefer to say "she", but that's me. "He" technically wouldn't be wrong.

Well, that's okay, it is what makes sense to you afterall. Though it is kind of mean to refer to Ryan as a "he" and make him wait for it. But sometimes that is the true test of her desire.

Note: I'm not an expert at writing comic pages, but I give my critique for us both to learn for a better future. Afterall, your an inspiration and I hope to learn from you and hopefully the otherway around from this dialogue.

1. I'm okay with flashbacks and the grey memory look only if properly executed, a story really is about a present conflict and memory only adds isolated revelations to the audience or to other characters if they are adressed to each other. I'm confident you won't do this, but its worth noting you won't allow flashbacks to overwhelm the story. If anything, I enjoy thinking about events that were unseen and as a reader left debating over how things played out.

2. I really remember something like this, when you first announce your secret feelings to others, as a child it really is scary as they think everyone feels the same thing. Only to discover that it really is........strange in the eyes of others. It really is embarrassing, but in the end, we are embarrassed that we got laughed at by those close to us. Poor little kid, he was so adorable.

Funny thing is that there are a number of flashbacks planned for this story. However, I don't think any of it really detracts from the present day aspect of the story. My goal is to write them in, in such a way that it helps to establish what's going on in the present. This three page prologue sequence for instance was, in my humble opinion, the perfect way to really set the tone for the entire story - right off the bat, we get a good laugh, followed immediately by a sad scene, all in such a way that introduces the main character and the main theme.

The thing is, my flashbacks are going to be much to complicated to just sum up in a dialogue bubble. If I'm showing a part of a character's past, it's because I believe it's relevant information for the story. So, they're really there to enhance, not to overwhelm. I hope that makes sense.

Mind you, in the 30+ pages I've made so far, I still haven't done another real flashback since.

Coming out at an age when you're too young to know what the big deal is tough. My own experience is somewhat similar to Ryan's. I said something similar at age 4 and was shot down right away, so I never mentioned it again. It would be another sixteen years before I told anyone again. So, I understand how rough it is.

That's a smart way to say it, at least you know what you are doing. Many people use dialogue dialogue flashback dialogue flashback from all these different people that you forget who you are supposed to care about. But the lauh+tension+cry=memory approach really was smart in your decision given the story.

I did a few "memory" scenes like that before, usually through dialogue and private character "me" times. And its okay, because if the audience is following this character we need to know why even if it means through a memory. I always go back to this with this point, if you heard of a monster you wouldn't understand its true meaning unless you talk to someone who has spoken to it. From us seeing that memory from a certain character that monster becomes more real and somehow more of a significance to us.

Don't worry about the flashbacks, you are a mediium that is guided by the story you discovered. If a "memory" is needed the story will tell you.

I can say I understand, it broke my heart when I was shot down by those I care about. But remember, after all those years and we still hold this dream, it really must be true, thanks Jocelyn

And no worries, the comic overall is continuing story, so the next page will pick up right where this leaves off, and so on, until this particular scene is over. ^_^
