OCSC Interview #7 – Rain Flaherty
from “Rain”

DISCLAIMER: A little word of notice to the readers.  Rain is typically very careful about how she words things so I can guarantee she is NOT going to out herself and say this herself at any point during the interview.  As such, allow me clarify this right now in order to hopefully avoid any truly confusing statements: Rain is a pre-operative male to female transsexual.  If she ever talks about “her condition” or “you know”, that’s almost definitely what she’s referring to (because she would simply much rather be addressed as a woman than as a transsexual).  Hopefully, this will help you all to avoid confusion.

Now without further ado, the interview:

Little Lynn: “Hello, Rain.  How are you doing today?”
Rain Flaherty: “I’m fine.”

LL: “Really?  ‘Cause you look grumpy.  What’s on your mind?”
RF: “You know what’s on my mind.  I really don’t feel comfortable being a part of this.”

LL: “I know.  So now is your chance to talk to me.  What can I do to make you comfortable?  I want you in the OCSC because you are, in fact,  my personal favorite OC.  My viewers want you in the OCSC because you are something of a popular sensation on DeviantArt.  But what can I do to make YOU want you in the OCSC?”
RF: “Take me out of it?”

LL: (laughs) “That was very sly of you, but sorry, no dice.”
RF: “Please!”

LL: “Now you’re not even trying.”
RF: (tearing up) “Oh, come on!  What can I do to convince you to not have me in this?”

LL: “Okay, Rain.  Before this goes any further and we waste all of this time arguing over positions neither of us will budge from, can I ask the favor that you at least allow me to conduct this interview?  Aside from the fact that I’d rather not make a huge spectacle of this, I think it’d simply be better if we spoke privately after the interview on this.  I’ll see if we can come to some sort of compromise.”
RF: (sniffle) “You promise?”

LL: “I promise.  But before that; the interview.  Is that okay?”
RF: “I guess so.”

LL: (Oh, thank god…)
RF: “Did you say something?”

LL: “Nope.  I was just clearing my throat.  Shall we get started then?”
RF: “Okay.”

LL: “Cheer up, Rain.  This won’t be hard.  They’re simple questions, courtesy of some of your many fans.  You may even have fun with this.”
RF: (forcing a smile) “Okay!”

LL: “That’s the spirit!”
RF: “Okay.  I think I’m ready.”

LL: “First question, then.  Would you ever date a girl?”
RF: “Actually, I’m really not attracted to guys… at all.  I’d much rather date a girl.”

LL: “Are you in a relationship now?”
RF: “Kind of… I think…”

LL: “Oh?  Go on.”
RF: “Well, there’s Maria.  I am frankly in love with her, and she says she loves me too.

LL: “Aaaawwww!  But you sound unsure.  What’s the problem?”
RF: (blushing hardcore) “Well, you know, she’s a lesbian too and since I’m… you know… well, our relationship is complicated.”

LL: “I’m not sure that what you said made any sense at all.”
RF: “In short, we really, deeply care about each other, but I don’t think it’s official.”

LL: “That must be hard.”
RF: “It is.  I honestly don’t know how I’d make it without her now though.  Maria’s always there for me.”

LL: “How does she feel about your inclusion in the OCSC, if I may ask?”
RF: “She’s… excited.”

LL: “Really?”
RF: “Are you going to tell me now that I should do this for her?”

LL: “Nope.  I already said I’m not going to try and convince you of anything.  All I’m doing is engaging in friendly conversation and asking a few… fairly random, questions for an interview.”
RF: “I see.”

LL: “Speaking of which, next question: Would you ever go to a nude beach.”
RF: (blushing… again) “What!?  Are you crazy!?”

LL: “I’ll take that as a ‘no’.”
RF: “You bet you will!”

LL: “I’m sorry.  I’m merely asking the questions I’m given.  And please understand that everyone else is being asked these questions.”
RF: “But still…”

LL: “Why?”
RF: “Hm?  Why what?”

LL: “It’s the next question.  Just why.”
RF: “Because I have to.”

LL: “Interesting answer.  Very deep.”
RF: “Thank you?”

LL: “What do you want most in the world.”
RF: “I want to become just like my mother.  Because she wasn’t just my mother, but also my greatest inspiration.  She was my idol.”

LL: “What has she done, if I may?”
RF: “She was a Paladin of great virtue.  Besides having saved people, prevented wars, slain devils, and having been up for canonization as a saint even before her death because of it, she mothered three children, myself included.  She never gave any of us any lack of attention either.  Many people admire her deeds, but as her child, I had the opportunity to admire her herself.”

LL: “That’s beautiful, Rain.  I wish you the very best of luck in your pursuit.”
RF: “Thank you.”

LL: “If you were stranded on an island with only three things, what would you want with you?”
RF: “My sword, for hunting.  Some source of fire for heat, light and cooking, because I’m no good at the fire making with two sticks thing.  And it might sound strange to you, but um… a dress.”

LL: “Still have to look pretty even when you’re alone?”
RF: “I’m actually just better under pressure when I look nice.  I mean, I’m not talking about a ball gown or anything.  Something light and non-restrictive will be fine, but it should just be a dress.”

LL: “I see.  Interesting.”
RF: “Don’t ask.  It’s just one of those things.  I kind of can’t help it.”

LL: “If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?”
RF: “I wish my mother had never died.  I wish my brother and sister would accept me.  And I wish I was born a…”

LL: “Born a…?  Why’d you stop?”
RF: (clears throat) “I wish I was born ‘differently’.  I’d rather not get into it.”

LL: “Fair enough.”
RF: “Thank you.  I appreciate that.”

LL: “What do you like on your toast in the morning.”
RF: “I like plain bread and butter actually.  But I don’t actually eat toast that often.”

LL: “Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched?”
RF: “Unfortunately, I feel like I’m always on display.  According to the small group of friends who know about my condition, they say I’m really convincing.  But I can’t ever seem to shake the unnerving feeling that everyone around me sees right through me.  I wonder sometimes that even if they don’t say anything about it, they might be thinking something.  And so many people are so disapproving of people like me that it really leads me to be pretty tense all the time.  It’s honestly pretty maddening.”

LL: “I’m very sorry to hear that.”
RF: “You see why I don’t want to be in the swimsuit contest?”

LL: “All I’m going to say is this, Rain: I want you to understand that I have all of the sympathy in the world for what you’re going through.  I understand it’s not easy and I don’t think anyone should have to go through what you do.  However, as I have said once before, I wouldn’t have included you in the OCSC if I didn’t think you were capable of pulling it off.  I think you look great and I personally believe that not one viewer would give any second thoughts about ‘the subject’ if they didn’t know.  That’s all I’m saying.”
RF: (blushes) “You really think so?”

LL: “I do.  But may we continue the interview.”
RF: “Okay.”

LL: “Do you identify with any of the four elements?”
RF: “Water.”

LL: “Because of your name?”
RF: “Not only that, actually.  I grew up near a port town, so I’m really just used to always being around water.  I don’t swim anymore like I did when I was a little kid though.”

LL: “Sorry to hear.”
RF: “It’s okay.”

LL: “What are some of your favorite things?”
RF: “Primarily, I enjoy admiring beauty.”

LL: “Anything in particular?”
RF: “Generic things, I guess.  Watching a butterfly in flight is mesmerizing to me.  I think most flowers are quite lovely.  And you said in my intro that I don’t like rain and snow, but I really just don’t like being out in them because it’s cold.  If I’m inside, I could happily watch it come down for hours.”

LL: “Generic, indeed.”
RF: “Well, if you want an uncommon response, I also find combat to be beautiful in a way.  I’m not talking about hurting others so much as the art of battle itself.  The motions and movements are really quite beautiful in a sparring match.”

LL: “Okay.  I’ll let that slide.  What do you wear to bed?”
RF: “Nightdress.  It’s the most comfortable thing to me.”

LL: “Last question: Pirates or Ninjas?”
RF: “Seriously?”

LL: “Yes.”
RF: “Ninjas.”

LL: “Really?”
RF: “Much of my own fighting style is borrowed from theirs - minus the killing thing, I guess.  But yeah, I rely on speed and grace more than brute strength.”

LL: “Very interesting.  And that’s it.  We’re done.  Was that so painful?”
RF: “No.  I guess not.”

LL: “Then before we stop today is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans, of which, I might add, you have many.”
RF: “Many fans?  Really?  Me?”

LL: “Yes, Rain.  You’re quite the popular one.”
RF: “I… thank you!  Thank all of you who support and accept me for who I am!  I can’t say enough how much I’m happy to hear that!  And… and I promise I’ll do my best for you all!”

LL: “Do your best…?”
RF: (whispers) “Just accept it before I change my mind again.”

LL: “Oh, right!  Thank you, Rain!  And thank you guys for reading.  I hope you’ll be back next Sunday when I’ll be interviewing Aubrey, my OTHER reclusive entrant.”
RF: “Are you making a jab at me?”

LL: “You and Amanda, actually.”
RF: “Hey!”

LL: “I promise you I don’t think that’s a bad thing.  Contrary to popular belief I’m recluse too.  I can only speak so confidently to you and my other OCs ‘cause you guys are fictional.”
RF: “Um… is it really okay to break the fourth wall like that?”

I knew I could get her involved. :D

Unfortunately, I feel like I had to come off particularly snotty in this one to do it. Poor Rain, having to put up with me like that. You guys better be nice to her though! She's pretty fragile you know!

I'm surprised Rain is so calm with the fourth wall being destroyed. I'd think she'd quickly change the subject as to not have an existential crisis.
